Luton Town’s Boxing Day Championship clash at home to Bristol City has been postponed due to a ‘number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Town playing squad’ – with some fans posting online that it’s ‘Christmas ruined’.
The game had yesterday been one of just four second tier matches still going ahead, with manager Nathan Jones saying that the Hatters had not had the number cases that would “decimate” has squad and result in a postponement.
The Welshman also had some strong words for clubs that, unlike Town, had allowed players’ Christmas parties to go ahead and then had to subsequently postponed festive fixtures.
Jones also talked yesterday about having to live with Covid and assess the dangers, but despite taking all the necessary precautions it’s understood that a significant number of positive tests were recorded this morning at Christmas Day training, resulting in a postponement.
In a statement, the club today said: ‘We are sorry to inform supporters that the Hatters’ Boxing Day fixture against Bristol City has been postponed.
‘The Sky Bet Championship match had been due to take place tomorrow, Sunday 26thDecember, with a 3pm kick-off at Kenilworth Road.
‘The postponement is due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases within the Town playing squad.
‘Any rearranged date will be confirmed in due course, with information on arrangements for tickets purchased shared once the Ticket Office reopens.
‘We would like to wish all Hatters a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!’
After the club posted the news online, fans replied with disappointment, with some saying that it was ‘Christmas ruined’.
It means Luton have played their last game of 2021 after the trip to Swansea on the 29th was postponed earlier in the week, having already been ordered behind closed doors by the Welsh government.
And some supporters wondered whether this current spate of football postponements will be the last, as Covid-19 cases, and the new Omicron variant spread across the nation and record rates, with one questioning: ‘Will I ever see a game again’?
Luton’s next scheduled fixture is a Championship trip to Coventry City on New Year’s Day.

There should have been a winter break taken last week for 2-3 weeks. That way every club would know their fixture schedule through to the end of the season. As it is, some clubs will have an easier time of it. That could influence relegation and promotion matters.
And for those saying “stick the kids out”, you’ve forgotten that it’s not just the players. Staff, volunteers, fans, traders of businesses are all also there when matches are on. This variant might be less dangerous, but it’s clearly more virulent. Until we know it’s definitely less dangerous, is it morally right to put thousands of people together? Remember Cheltenham, and Liverpool v Athletico probably led to lots of unnecessary deaths. And playing behind closed doors sucks and should be avoided at all costs.
Let the science catch up then start again when it’s known to be safe enough.
