Luton’s trip to Swansea has been called off after the Welsh side reported an additional number of positive Covid-19 cases.
The Championship clash on December 29 had already been ordered behind closed doors by the Welsh government, due to the record rise in cases, with new variant Omicron spreading rapidly.
In a statement Swansea said: ‘This is due to an additional number of positive COVID-19 cases within the playing squad.
‘The club has worked hard to ensure that it has been able to fulfil the fixture, however, taking into account injuries and positive COVID-19 cases, the club does not have a sufficient number of players available in order to fulfil the fixture.’
A Hatters statement said: ‘Swansea informed the EFL that taking into account the injuries and positive Covid-19 cases within their squad, the club does not have a sufficient number of players available in order to fulfil the fixture.
‘In light of the increased rate of transmissions from the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the EFL will review the circumstances surrounding the postponement and work with affected clubs.’
Earlier today, commenting on not being able to take a travelling Town contingent, boss Nathan Jones said: “The First Minister there will obviously know far more than what I do, but it is disappointing that we can’t have Luton fans there, first and foremost. With the greatest of respect I’m not concerned about Swansea fans, but I can’t criticise God’s country for shutting down because they must have good reason.
“This thing isn’t going away and what has to be considered is how dangerous it is, how potent it is, what damage it is doing before shutting down and taking away years from people.”
This followed on from the Welshman’s comments, in which also said that the nation has to learn to live with Covid, rather than keep imposing restrictions and his response to whether new EFL guidelines were sufficient to make clubs fulfil fixtures.
Jones today also called for punishments for clubs that allowed their players to have Christmas parties and then called off festive games, saying he knew of clubs that had done this, while Luton cancelled theirs to fulfil fixtures and protect the integrity of the competition.
It means Luton’s last game of 2021 will be the Boxing Day clash against Bristol City at Kenilworth Road, which is one of only four Championship games still set to go ahead. Players are expected at the Hatters’ Brache training HQ tomorrow. Then Town’s first fixture of 2022 is set to be a trip to Coventry on New Year’s Day.
