Cornick says Luton ‘could’ve gone on to win the game’ if Collins’ goal had stood at Charlton

Harry Cornick felt Luton could have gone on to beat Charlton, rather than lose, if a James Collins goal had not been controversially ruled out for offside.

The former Bournemouth flyer provided the assist, having levelled the scores in the first half. Replays later showed that Collins was onside when Cornick shot across goal, sliding in to convert.

“I would say it was going (to hit the) post and go out,” he said, adding of his strike partner: “He’s always there to tap them in and I think that’s what he does brilliantly for the team. He’s always there to score these sorts of goals and whether it was onside or offside, if that goes in and counts we could’ve gone on to win the game.

“It’s unfortunate. I’m gutted for him, really. Another goal for him would’ve been nice.”

When asked about the offside call, Cornick, speaking immediately after the defeat at The Valley having not seen a replay, said: “You’ve seen it back, I haven’t. Linesmen make mistakes and sometimes they go for you, sometimes they don’t. We didn’t get the rub of the green with the officiating, but sometimes we’ll get that and sometimes we won’t.”

The incident proved pivotal and costly as Collins then handled in his own area, which saw Lyle Taylor score the winning goal from the penalty spot, though George Lapslie made it 3-1 late on.

Cornick said: “I was up the pitch, so I had an alright view of it. His hand’s tip, so it’s no complaints. I thought I had one that I tried to cross and the guy’s hand was to the side.

“I thought he (ref Andre Marriner) might give that one, because he’s given one to Collo, but sometimes the refs gives some and sometimes they don’t. It’s just the way refs are, so no complaints, I don’t think.”

Cornick did get on the scoresheet, however, with a fine side-foot strike to notch his eighth of the campaign.

“I thought it was a good finish and it’s nice to get on the scoresheet again and keep my personal tally going up,” he said, adding: “It’s good for my confidence going into the last few games, trying to pick up a few more goals and help the team get some more points.”
