Jamie Donley says Luton Town have benefited from a “reset” following their defeat at MK Dons as the Hatters’ winning run continued with a 3-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers last night.
The Tottenham Hotspur loanee scored twice at Kenilworth Road as Town made it three successive League One wins, taking nine points from their three home games in eight days against Barnsley, Leicester City and Doncaster.
The results have lifted Luton to within one point of the play-off places and represent their best run of the season so far, with Donley pointing to the response after the 2-1 loss in Milton Keynes as a key turning point.
“After the MK Dons game, we had a kind of a reset, and three really big home wins,” he told LTFC+, adding: “After Barnsley, that was when we wanted to push on and then obviously scoring in the last minute [agaimst Leicester] gives us another really big boost.
“Tonight, coming up to our place, we know that we want to make it as difficult as possible for any team to come. And I think the last three games we’ve done that and we’ve showed that. So, yeah, positives.”
The forward was also delighted to get his name on the scoresheet twice, with both goals coming from well-struck finishes as he continues to make an impact for the Hatters.
Donley said: “The first one, really nice finish. I tried to get a solid contact on it. And then the second one, it was obviously a cutback and then it kind of just fell to me and I thought I’d get another clean contact. I’m delighted to score two goals.”
Boss Jack Wilshere said of the 21-year-old’s two strikes: “He works really hard on a lot of his game, but probably the one thing he focuses on a lot is his finishing. He always out with Marshy [Callum Marshall], working on that.
“You get what you deserve. No surprises for me that when he gets in front of goal, you’re confident he’s got a really nice left foot. The first touch one for the first goal was excellent. He works on that, it’s a credit to him.”
With confidence growing and the play-off places within touching distance, Luton will now look to carry that momentum into their next fixture, while continuing to address the late goals they have conceded.
Donley admitted the late goal conceded against Doncaster was frustrating, particularly after Luton had established a three-goal advantage, but felt the hosts could have made the scoreline even more emphatic.
“It was a really good performance. Obviously, a bit of the last 20 minutes was disappointing, to concede. We’re trying to keep clean sheets, but really positive,” he said.
“We probably could have scored a lot more goals. It probably should have been five or six and then the game’s done. Obviously, it’s disappointing to concede. But it’s a really good performance.”
