The pre-season friendly preparations are now done as Rob Edwards leads Luton into their final week of training before a “momentous occasion” away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Away tickets for Town’s first-ever Premier League game quickly sold out and it’s a day that has been eagerly anticipated since the Championship play-off victory in May and then the release of the fixture list.
At the weekend, the Hatters rounded off their summer friendly schedule on Saturday with a double-header at German Bundesliga side Bochum, where they won one and lost.
That opening game was Luton’s only defeat in pre-season, but having last played in the top flight in 1992, before the Premier League began, this weekend is a step into the unknown.
“It’s a momentous occasion for the football club and I think we’ve all got to enjoy it,” said boss Edwards.
“We want to be competitive and give a good account of ourselves against a top team. I’m looking forward to preparations. We’re going to work really hard and get a good balance, so we arrive with good energy going into Saturday.”
Luton will be assessing injuries picked up by Jordan Clark and Dan Potts in Germany, though the initial assessment was not as bad as first feared.
Town have been without defender Gabriel Osho and Reece Burke, while trying to establish six new signings into the squad.
With time for work on the training field, Edwards told the club’s website: “It’s a really important week. They’re all going to be important weeks now. They have been, the five previous ones we’ve had since we’ve come back (for pre-season), and everyone until the end of the season are all going to be big, big weeks.
“We’ll have to manage them right, make good decisions, work incredibly hard and we’re all going to be learning quickly, but I’m really excited. I think we all are.”
