Rob Edwards does not believe Luton will suffer a comedown at Millwall after derby delight over Watford, because of what his Luton players were saying in the dressing room straight after beating their arch-rivals.
Town won 2-0 on Saturday in a feverish atmosphere at Kenilworth Road where fans had not been present at the fixture for 17 years, but the wait was worth it as virtually everything went right for the Hatters
The victory moved them 12 points ahead of their neighbours from down the road and level on points with third-placed Middlesbrough and tomorrow Town travel to Millwall, who occupy fifth spot.
But asked if he has any concerns that the adrenaline-fuelled emotions of Saturday could result in something of comedown at The Den, manager Edwards said: “No. To reaffirm that point, immediately after the game when you’d normally expect the dressing room to be full of elation and celebrations, there were one or two people saying, ‘Lads, it’s great, but we can be better than that. We can play better’.
“I think that shows the standards that this group has got and the expectations they’ve got of each other as well.
“We don’t want it to be after the Lord Mayor’s show in a big game, get a good performance and a win and then go sloppy. It can’t be that because the Championship, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, won’t allow you to drop your levels.”
Millwall are six points behind Luton and the two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 in February where Town came back from two goals down. The Lions have lost twice and drawn twice in the five games since that meeting at Kenilworth Road, while the Hatters are the league’s form team with four victories and a draw.
But just as Luton fans made it a hostile home atmosphere for Watford at the weekend, Edwards is expecting Millwall to lay on a similar reception for his men in the capital.
“It will be an intense game, big game, important for both teams and we’re expecting a really fiery atmosphere. That’s great,” said Edwards.
“These are the games we want to be involved in, at the right end of the table, a full house, I’m sure, an everyone playing for something. It’s great.
“These big occasions, we’ve enjoyed them lately. I think the atmosphere on the weekend, felt a little bit like that. Because it was a local derby, it felt a little bit different. A bigger game, bigger occasion, the players dealt with that really well and I think it will feel similar on Friday.”
Town beat Millwall in south London last season courtesy of a Harry Cornick brace, ending a run of six game with a victory at The Den stretching back to 1999, and Edwards feels his men are now accustomed to big atmospheres and big games.
“They don’t come much more difficult than Millwall away,” said the Luton boss, adding: “Their home form has been very strong and they’ve been strong all season anyway, home or away.
“They’re a very tough nut to crack. They’re very well coached with very good, individual players as well. It’s an extremely difficult game, but one we’re looking forward to as well.
“The lads have risen to a lot of challenges, really tough games, and some of our best performances have been in those big games. We’re looking forward to it again.”
