Luton boss Rob Edwards says he’s not losing any sleep over reports of Manchester United planning a summer transfer swoop for star midfielder Ross Barkley.

A story emerged at the weekend that the Red Devils, now with new investment from INEOS owner and billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have earmarked the Hatter as part of a spending spree after this season.

Barkley joined the Hatters last summer as a free agent, penning a three-year contract, has reignited his career at Kenilworth Road and he was instrumental in bossing possession against United earlier this month, despite Town losing 2-1.

The 30-year-old came to prominence as a teenager at his boyhood club Everton, but a multi-million pound move to Chelsea was regarded as unfulfilled before he moved for one season to French Ligue 1 side Nice, also owned by Ratcliffe, who has talked glowingly of the midfielder in the past.

For Luton, Barkley has three goals and three assists in 20 Premier League appearances so far, with chairman David Wilkinson telling the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust Podcast that the Liverpudlian is the best player he’s ever seen in a Hatters shirt.

And Barkley was recently named in the one per cent of players across Europe’s top leagues that has created the most amount of chances by taking players on.

But on the reports in the national media at the weekend, claiming Manchester United’s interest in the midfielder, Town boss Edwards said: “At the moment, nothing can happen until the end of the season, so I’m not going to lose any sleep over it at the moment.

“I don’t know if there’s any truth in it and, at the moment, it doesn’t worry me. If Manchester United are interested in some of our players then we are doing something right, and the players are doing something right.

“Again, take that with a pinch of salt at the moment because we’re in February and there’s a while to go yet before the window opens again.”
