Luton Town have appointed former Hearts recruitment chief William Lancefield as the club’s new Head of Recruitment ahead of manager Jack Wilshere’s summer rebuild for the new League One season.

The Hatters confirmed Lancefield will arrive at Kenilworth Road from Scottish Premiership side Hearts of Midlothian, bringing experience from previous roles with Southampton, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

His appointment comes after what the club described as a “comprehensive end-of-season review” of their recruitment and scouting operation following a campaign which ended with Luton narrowly missing out on the League One play-offs despite a dramatic late-season revival under Wilshere.

Chief executive Gary Sweet said Lancefield had emerged as the “outstanding candidate” for a key role as the Hatters reshape their football department.

“William’s arrival is a significant coup for Luton Town,” Sweet told the club’s website, adding: “His experience, knowledge of the game and clear understanding of our needs made him the outstanding candidate for this pivotal role.

“We’re looking forward to working with him and excited about the impact he can make as we evolve our recruitment structure and processes in preparation for the new season and beyond.”

Lancefield is expected to play a major role in helping Wilshere build a squad capable of mounting another promotion push, with the manager already outlining plans for a significant summer overhaul and a renewed focus on recruiting “hungry players” who fit the club’s culture and identity.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Lancefield said Luton’s ambition was a major factor in his decision to join the club.

“I’m delighted to be joining Luton Town,” he said, adding: “After I met with the club and learned more about its potential and ambition, I knew straight away this was one I wanted to be a part of.

“I understand what it takes to build strong, competitive squads, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Jack and the wider staff to recruit players who reflect Luton’s identity and ambition.”

The club say Lancefield, who officially starts his new role on June 19, will oversee a “live, data-informed approach” to recruitment aligned with Wilshere’s playing philosophy and the evolving make-up of the squad.

Luton also confirmed the departures of two long-serving members of the recruitment department.

Jay Socik leaves after more than five years with the Hatters, having progressed from freelance analyst work into a full-time role as Head of Recruitment Analysis during a period which included promotion to the Premier League.

Senior scout Alexander Wilkinson also departs after four years at the club.

The Hatters said they would continue to retain significant experience within the department, with Yousuf Sajjad remaining as Player Recruitment Manager, Marc Tracy continuing as Chief Scout and club legend Mick Harford staying on as Senior Scout alongside his ambassadorial duties.
