Councillor Tahmina Saleem has been officially appointed as the new leader of Luton Council following the decision of long-serving leader Councillor Hazel Simmons MBE to step down after nearly two decades in charge.
Cllr Saleem was chosen by the Labour group in March and takes over leadership of the authority at a pivotal moment for the town, with major regeneration schemes, housing projects and long-term investment plans already under way.
First elected in 2019, Cllr Saleem and has represented both Round Green and Biscot wards. She previously served as Mayor of Luton between 2024 and 2025 and was portfolio holder for children, families and education from 2021 until 2024.
Her appointment comes as the council pushes ahead with several high-profile developments including The Stage town centre scheme and airport expansion proposals.
In her first statement as leader, Cllr Saleem said: “It is a great honour to become Leader of Luton Council. I’m proud to call Luton my home – a town that shows how people of all backgrounds can live and thrive together.
“Our immediate focus will be on what matters most to residents day to day. We will improve the look and feel of our town by tackling litter and fly-tipping, crack down on anti-social behaviour, address illegal and unsafe parking, and invest millions to upgrade all 60 of our council play parks.”
She also said her longer-term ambition was to secure better jobs, homes and public spaces for the town.
“Looking ahead, my priority as leader will be to secure the good quality jobs and homes, and the cleaner, safer streets that our communities deserve,” she said.
“We know we have huge challenges ahead – but we have such youthful potential in this town, and I believe we can meet those challenges and go far beyond.”
Cllr Saleem paid tribute to her predecessor, adding: “I want to thank Cllr Simmons for her dedication and leadership over nearly two decades. She leaves a remarkable legacy, having laid the foundations for long-term prosperity that will benefit generations to come.”
Councillor Umme Ali has been appointed deputy leader, replacing Councillor Javed Hussain. Ali has represented High Town ward since 2021 and has served as portfolio holder for children’s services since 2024.
The new cabinet line-up has also been confirmed.
Cllr James Taylor takes on responsibility for education, employment and skills, while Cllr Yaqub Hanif becomes portfolio holder for finance.
Cllr Alia Khan will oversee housing, Cllr Rumi Chowdhury takes responsibility for adult social care and public health, and Cllr Basit Mahmood becomes portfolio holder for regeneration and inclusive growth.
