A young Scout from Luton has been recognised by Dwayne Fields after saving the life of a fellow Scout during a dramatic incident in Switzerland.
Anastacia Jones was named one of the UK’s 20 recipients of the Chief Scout’s Unsung Heroes Award after rescuing another young person who lost consciousness while swimming in Lake Oeschinensee.
The awards recognise Scouts aged between four and 24 who have shown exceptional courage, leadership and kindness in their communities.
During the trip, the fellow Scout became unconscious in open water and started to sink beneath the surface. Anastacia immediately went into the water to help, pushing the youngster back to shore before administering first aid.
She also remained calm while directing other Scouts at the scene, delegating tasks and helping to ensure support was in place until further assistance arrived.
Scouts said her “quick-thinking, physical courage and decisive leadership undoubtedly saved her fellow Scout’s life”.
Anastacia’s father, Gray Jones, said: “I’m proud of her every single day and this just proves what an amazing person she is.”
Chief Scout Dwayne Fields said: “I’m incredibly proud of our Unsung Heroes 2026. Each of them has shown real courage, kindness and care for others.
“They’ve stepped up and making a difference when it mattered most. They truly represent what Scouts is all about: building skills, using them to do good in the world, giving everyone a place to belong.
“Earning an Unsung Heroes Award is an incredible achievement. Thank you and well done to each of them for inspiring us and giving back to their communities.”
The awards were presented during a ceremony at Gilwell Park, the home of UK Scouting, with family members, friends and fellow Scouts in attendance.
The Chief Scout’s Unsung Heroes Award is open to nominations from across the Scout movement and celebrates young people who use the skills and values developed through Scouting to make a positive difference in everyday life.
