Gary Sweet has confirmed that a music venue is still in the plans for Luton Town’s Power Court stadium site – but additional funding will be required.
A football museum celebrating the club’s history is also an ambition when detailed planning application for their new home is submitted, which the Hatters chief executive had already confirmed in his programme notes last weekend are ‘on track’ to be delivered in the next few months.
Last month, Luton’s plans for Newlands Park was granted planning permission by the council, though the site at junction 10 of the M1 had already been sold to an investment fund advised by Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (MSREI) and the UK developer Wrenbridge.
That is expected to help finance the 17,500-seater stadium in the heart of the town centre. More than 1,000 apartments will also contribute to the cost of the football ground, while there are expected to be some leisure and retail when detailed plans are submitted.
Since proposals were first unveiled in 2016, they have been complemented by a music venue, which was billed as a 1,800-capacity space, which would take the town from having no dedicated venue for live music to having a space similar in size to Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. But it won’t be without its issues to deliver.
Speaking to The Athletic Football Podcast, Sweet said: “The music business has been really hit badly recently, through coronavirus. It’s recovering slowly, but it is recovering. We have got a planning application for a music venue next to it, which will be kind of connected to the stadium.
“There is still a hole for that, a slot for that. Clearly, we’ll have to wait for some funding on that. It’s not something that we can necessarily build unit there’s a guaranteed business model at the back of it.
“We hope that that would work and that might open up opportunities for music in that area.
“Going back to what Luton’s known for, it’s kind of known for its football, its boxing, its music. There are a lot of good musicians that come out of Luton. There’s that element. We’re also connected to the music industry with a couple of people not he board.”
Luton’s plans may be boosted the inclusion on their board of the head of Sony Music Group Rob Stringer, who last month received the GRAMMY Salute to Industry Icons award for his leadership impact and dedication to advancing innovation in the music industry. He was also was made a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list.
Sweet also confirmed ambitions for a Luton Town museum at Power Court, tapping into the work already carried out by Hatters Heritage, a supporter-run charity which secured lottery funding to develop a website to preserves the history of the football club.
Sweet said of the organisation: “It’s got one of the most extensive websites of Luton Town’s history, going back to when we turned professional in 1885. It’s a phenomenal piece of work that these guys are doing, volunteering.
“We’re looking to, if possible, to put a museum in, just to celebrate our past and our rollercoaster history.”
