Luton look set to miss out on re-signing former striker Isaac Vassell with reports suggesting Cardiff City have moved for the Birmingham forward.
Luton are due to face the Bluebirds in the Championship on Saturday and, with the transfer window closing on Thursday at 5pm, Vassell could be lining up against his old side, rather than re-joining them.
Hatters boss Graeme Jones confirmed at the weekend that the 25-year-old was a player he was interested in but that the situation was ‘complicated’.
That is, in part, because Swansea are also believed to have shown an interest after they lost they star striker Ollie McBurnie to Sheffield United.
Vassell was left out of the Birmingham squad that lost 3-0 to Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup tonight and Blues boss Pep Clotet is quoted in Wales Online as saying: “Isaac travelled with us and was close to having some movements,” he said.
“The club notified me of that and it was not appropriate to use him.
“I think Vass is a striker who can bring speed to the game, obviously that’s something other players can’t bring.
“It’s difficult to make an evaluation now because he was injured the whole of last season and he came back from injury at the end of the season.
“It’s difficult to assess the loss.”
Vassell was discovered by Luton playing for Truro City in the non-league and was signed after a spell as a pre-season triallist in the summer of 2016. He quickly impressed with his pace and power in League Two and a year later was snapped up by then Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp for a fee reported to be in the region of £1million.
However a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, suffered just weeks after joining the Blues, has restricted Vassell to one goal and just 24 appearances.
