‘I can’t swallow that at any team I’m involved in,’ says Jones over late Hull goals

Graeme Jones says he won’t stand for the mistakes that led to Hull City’s last two goals as his Luton side went to 3-0.

Town were promising in possession in the first half, without having a shot on target, but Kevin Stewart crashed in a volley on 63 minutes before two late goals in three minutes consigned the Hatters to a second straight defeat.

Neither team looked likely to score for the first hour but once Stewart fired the first of a personal brace, it gave the hosts a mountain to climb.

First Kamil Grosicki smashed in a second and then Dan Potts suffered a calamity of errors, smashing the ball against Simon Sluga and then comically failing to clear off the line with his head, to allow Stewart as simple second.

Jones said: “They sat in, they played on our mistakes. We had possession in all three goals, when we conceded. Sometimes it’s fine margins but the disappointment of the second and third goals, I can’t hide it. I can’t swallow that at any team I’m involved in.

“I’m going to go home tonight when everybody else is going out and I’m going to watch the game. It’ll take me a long time and we’ll have a meeting tomorrow because we’ve got to clear Hull City away. We’ve got a Premier League side coming on Tuesday night (Leicester).”

At 1-0 down was when Town had the first effort on target but they couldn’t force a leveller.

“We had a couple of chances and I think we were building momentum for maybe five or ten minutes. I can think of (Ryan) Tunnicliffe having a shot, Sonny Bradley having a great header in the six-yard box, I can think of a rebound nearly being over the line.

“After that, I felt like we were spent and that’s my disappointment today. That resistance and that fight, especially when the second goal went in, I can’t have that.”

After last week, when Luton capitulated to three Queens Park Rangers goals in the first 28 minutes, Jones’ side where much better in the first half and he added: “I was pleased with the first half performance and I thought the goal was coming. I asked us to be consistent with our football performance as we had been in the first half and we couldn’t sustain it.

“Even then, when I look at the first goal back, if James Collins flicks the ball on we’ve got two spare players free in the box. And that’s the margins in football. James doesn’t flick it on and they go down the other end of the pitch and we concede. That’s the fine margins you’re dealing with in the Championship.

“The second goal’s a long ball. It’s individual errors. The third goal is comical and really it’s a 1-0 game.”
