‘I want that boy to flourish as I see something in him,’ says boss of Pereira

Nathan Jones has said he sees something in Dion Pereira and the attacker’s talents were why he was not sent out on loan and one of the reasons the manager didn’t make any transfer deadline day signings.

The winger came into the first-team fold towards the end of last term and has continued to impress during the summer.

Some thought he might have been loaned out to help his development but he appears closer to manager Jones’ plans.

“We take a loan if they Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall us – we’ve got a new name for that now, in terms of not improve us – but if they Kiernan us then we’ll take a loan, and that’s basically how we go about things.

“If they don’t then we don’t need numbers as we’ve got wonderful players. We’ve got people here now who are chomping at the bit. I’ve got Dion Pereira here who I’m really excited about and we could have taken young ones in that position, but then Dion would never flourish and I want that boy to flourish as I see something in him.”

Jones admitted Town weren’t without offers for his players and he added: “We could have moved a number of them as we’ve got good players here, and players that are coveted, but it’s about, one, is it the right move for them, two, is it the right move for us.

“And then, if we do let them go, can we improve significantly and we couldn’t, so there’s no point.”

In the end, only Peter Kioso went out on loan on a quiet transfer deadline day, with Town having done their recruitment early in the summer.

Jones said: “Most of our transfer business was done two months ago in May and June. What we said we would do was if the right thing came up, we would go for something that would add considerable quality to our squad.

“That wasn’t the case so what we did then was kept hold of the ones we could have loaned out, for example Danny Hylton, Dion Pereira but if there is nothing better to bring in then we keep hold of ours.

“We’re delighted with our squad, a lot of people get excited on deadline day because they haven’t done much business, they do two or three and suddenly they’re in a wonderful place. But we did all that business, we brought all our business in well early.

“They have had six to eight to ten weeks of training so we feel we are in a real good place in terms of the squad and we’re delighted with that. Our Chief Exec (Gary Sweet), who is a Luton fan, would have loved to bring in something that would have really excited everyone, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t available.

“And then we have to move one or two out that, at times, we didn’t want to.”
