Coaches Inigo Idiakez and Gary Brabin have claimed that Luton are one of the best team units in the Championship, just without the star quality in their rivals’ ranks – which means no less than 100 per cent effort is required to avoid the drop.
Town travel to Charlton tomorrow for a relegation six-pointer in buoyant mood after two 1-0 wins on the spin cut the gap to safety to just four points.
First team coach Idiakez and assistant manager Brabin both stood in for boss Graeme Jones at today’s pre-match press confidence and the Spaniard said of the survival scrap: “We really believe in the players and they really believe they can do it.
“Every day they (players) come here with a good, positive mind. With the two wins it really helps the team, the fans, the football club, that we can do it.
“The important thing for me is that if we go to football matches and be 100 per cent I think we’ll be alright in the division because, as a team, I think we are one of the best teams, maybe not as individuals, but as a team we are really good.
“We normally give everything and, for me, that’s the key, that’s the message we want to send with the fans, with the football club, with everyone.
“In every single match from now on, if we give everything like the last two months, I think we’ll be alright in the division, but we have to be 100 per cent, no less. That’s the message we want to send, and they have to trust us.”
Maximum effort has been a feature of Town taking nine points from the last 15 and Brabin said: “I genuinely believe, and we all believe, we think we’re one of the best sides in the league. I think the difference is, all the other teams have that little bit of individual quality that can win them a game.
“We’ve got a good, honest bunch of lads who have done an amazing job the last few years. They’re competing at this level and I can only think of two or three where we’ve not been competing as well as we can.
“Managers, coaching staff, teams have been very complementary of the way we play, and I believe that we are a good side, one of the best sides in the league. But we haven’t got the luxury of a (Aleksander) Mitrovic, whose got that little bit of quality to win games.”
