Jerome sees top-flight future for Adebayo but urges longer at Luton

Cameron Jerome says Elijah Adebayo can “comfortably” make the step up to the Premier League – but that the goalscorer needs a little longer in the Championship first.

Both men notched in Sunday’s 4-0 FA Cup fourth round over Harrogate, with the veteran providing the assist for Town’s top marksman to expertly fire his 11th of the season.

Jerome has been restricted to 16 appearance and just two goals for the Hatters, largely because of the success of Adebayo and strike partner Harry Cornick, but the 35-year-old has been nothing but impressed by the former, in particular.

“Me and Elijah work really closely,” said the striker, who has a wealth of top-flight experience.

“I try not to force things on him in terms of saying do this, do that. Elijah is really good, he has such a good work ethic and a great attitude and application.

“Naturally, I ask, ‘what do you think to this or that?’ I say it as it is and he’s got such an appetite in terms of wanting to better himself and improve as a player, personally, it just turns to normal conversation.

“In terms of what the management staff do with him, the gaffer, Chris (Cohen) and Mick (Harford), there are a lot of people he can lean on, ask questions.

“He looks back at a lot of his clips, looking at his game, how he can improve and get a bit more of an edge on. Some of the work he does in the afternoon, not a lot of people see.

“The gaffer will take him for sessions in the afternoon because he has that appetite and desire to get better and improve, which is a breath of fresh air to see someone at that age, now, in this day and age, he has such a good appetite to work and succeed, which is nice to see.”

Now, with the transfer window open, it’s natural that Adebayo’s rise – in less that a year since signing from League Two Walsall – has led to transfer rumours, most notably from Premier League strugglers Newcastle, earlier in the month.

Jerome said: “I think he has to remain focused, keep his feet on the ground and he has a great chance of going all the way.

“He has the attributes needed to play in the top flight, whether that is with this club or another team, that’ll be up to him and how far he goes. I suppose luck and timing as well, but he definitely has the attributes to play at the top level.

“He probably needs a bit more at this level before he takes that step, but when he does, I think he’ll take that step quite comfortably.”

But Adebayo is ahead of him in the pecking order, Jerome is philosophical about the amount of game time he’s managed so far since signing on a free in the summer.

He said: “It’s also testament to the guys in front. Harry Cornick has been performing really well. The level of performance from Elijah Adebayo is really good and the manager’s got a few of the younger players he’s brought in who have got high potential as well. They’ve not managed to cement their places in the side as of yet.

“So, there’s a number of factors. It comes with your age. I wasn’t expecting to play as many games in myself. I’ve played one or two, I probably could have played a few more, but maybe that’s down to me.

“Maybe I need to show the manager a little bit more. Look, I’m still here, I’m still hungry, regardless of the situation or my age, or the form of other players.

“I’ve got to maybe push it in training a little bit more, to force the manager’s hand, to say, ‘Cam’s training at a really high level, and he looks hungry, looks ready to play again’.

“So, it’s maybe something I’m not doing that I have to look at, and speak to the coaching staff about that.

“At the minute, I’m happy in terms of how things are going, what I am contributing, in terms of off and on the pitch. And I know there’s plenty of games, it’s a long season.”
