Graeme Jones admitted the Luton fans had ‘every right’ to boo him off the pitch after a 2-1 Championship defeat to Birmingham City.

The boos were sparse at half time with his team out of sorts and the Blues 1-0 up from a fourth minute Lukas Jutkiewicz goal, but they rang around Kenilworth Road at the final whistle after Gary Gardner had overturned James Collins’ penalty equaliser.

Asked about the cacophony of jeers as he trudged across the pitch at the final whistle, towards the tunnel, Jones said: “I don’t blame the supporters. You get beat again, especially today at home, they’re allowed to vent their frustrations.

“At the minute, I’m not doing a good job, the players aren’t doing a good job and you have to hold your hand up, but we’re under enormous financial restrictions, in terms of attracting people to the football club, and that’s the truth.

“They’ve got every right because we’re on a run of a number of defeats. Absolutely every right. But, I think if anybody was a football man, they could see we were short today.

“As I’ve said, over and over again, we need our best players on the pitch, we need to get some new players in to have a chance of competing at this level.

“The chances of that are, I’m optimistic because that’s the type of person I am. Next week is always another opportunity to win three points. At the minute, they’re struggling. We need some help.

“Izzy’s close, he should train this week. Martin Cranie’s close. It was good to get Dan back for 45 minutes today even though he’s only trained three days. Hopefully we’ll get some additions next week.”

Asked what it was like to walk to the tunnel whilst hearing the boos, Jones said: “What’s really, really difficult is when you dedicate your life to the job. You spend 12-plus hours a day at it. You sleep with it on your mind. You work seven days a week and your reward from football is nothing.

“It’s not romantic at all. But, I know the game and I know the industry and, as I’ve said, the supporters have got every right.”

With some fans turning to the 2020 Board after the game, Jones was asked whether he worries that the board won’t stick with him.

He said: “I never think about that. All I think about is a solution.

“I had a question the other day, ‘why do you change the team so much?’ Because I’m trying to find the solution. I know what the problems are because I work bloody hard to try to find solutions.

“Today, we’ve – me, the players – have failed.”
