Nathan Jones sent a message to fans over “berserk” social media posts with misplaced expectations, after his Hatters beat Blackburn 2-0 to finally end their winless start to the season at home.
Carlton Morris fired his sixth in six games before Reece Burke sealed his return to the side with a sumptuous strike.
Jones had recently expressed his shock and surprise over online comments and he returned to the subject, urging some supporters to realise how the club is always battling “against the odds”, but managing to do it.
He said: “It was a wonderful performance and needed because, I don’t read social media, but people sometimes show me stuff and people say, ‘we should be doing stuff’.
“I have a message for our fans. There are a lot of Championship teams that have been in the Championship that should be beating teams. And their fans keep saying it, ‘we should be beating teams’, and they don’t. They’re still in the Championship.
“We’re not a team that should be beating teams. What we are is a team that goes about our business with humility, we’re hard-working, have an honest group and a wonderful way of doing stuff.
“We’ve got an environment that’s fantastic and, at times, it’s difficult because Championship games are very difficult to win, as you found out, the first year we were in it.
“Now, we can say, ‘we should be, should be, should be’ but those are the type of performances we put in and the fans should get behind that.
“There’s no god-given right to win a football game. We’re a relatively new side at this level at the minute and, with the greatest of respect, we haven’t got the resources of those sides that should be winning games
“But we just keep doing it and I’m really proud of the team, so get behind the team because they were magnificent today.
“But when they’re apprehensive then it affects people. We’ve got a wonderful group here with a wonderful way of doing stuff and I want them to get behind that, because we shouldn’t be beating teams. We do, but there’s no god-given right to do that.”
He added: “We stuttered a little bit at home, but today was good. We’re difficult to play against at home and I’m really proud of the team and how they’ve gone about it because they had to show a little bit of resolve.
“People have got on to them. I heard someone say, ‘it’s going to be a long season, boys’. Fans.
“Honestly, it’s mental. It’s absolutely berserk because we have to realised what we are. We’re a wonderful side that does excellently and I’m really proud of the group and how we react and come through stuff, because we are fighting against the odds. But we continue to do it.”

Eff sake. If I was Sweet or anyone else on the Board I’d be having a word now. Stop the unwinnable battle with some fans. No manager, owner or player of any club ever wins that fight in the long run.
Focus on the performances and results. Celebrate it today rather than continuing trying to fight.
As for the game, much much better. The defence looks so much more balanced with Burke and Lockyer. The midfield looks good with Lansbury. And Morris is great. Bell had his best game in ages and that made a huge difference. It keeps the opposition having to work so much harder when he’s as much of a threat on the left as Bree is on the right.
Spot on, Jim. Listen, NJ, and take note.
There are two golden rules for a manager: don’t have a go at your players in public and don’t row with your fans.
Your fans are the one constant in a club’s life. They won’t be lured away by the fleshpots of Stoke or Bristol City. They’re there for life.
Yesterday’s team selection was right, performance was right and outcome great. What a pity to take away the gloss with another misguided go at the fans. Grow up.
To be fair, NJ, you saved us from relegation on your return from Stoke, steadied the ship and then took us on a tremendous push for promotion. Everybody knows this, but it’s worth reiterating in the light of the present debate. It doesn’t mean you’re infallible or beyond criticism, but we should maybe cut you some slack.
I see the bookies have installed you as one of the favourites for the Cardiff job and, given your background, nobody could blame you for being interested. But, as far as we know, that’s only the bookies. It’s been suggested that you’re rocking the boat in this dispute with the fans in order to justify your looking elsewhere, but are you that devious? Dodgy tactics, I would think, since Cardiff may or may not be interested – unless you know something we don’t!
Either way, whether you go or whether you stay, I wish you well – as, I’m sure, do most Luton fans. Having been a Town supporter for a very long time, I’d say you’re up there with the very best of our managers – and we’ve had some good ones!
