Nathan Jones admitted being more honest than he should have been about the Wigan defeat, revealing he was affected by some fans’ comments that questioned his tactics.

Luton let slip a 1-0 lead in the last ten minutes to lose 2-1 to the Latics and afterwards he admitted that his five substitutions didn’t “come off”.

The Town boss is now preparing for the visit of Coventry City tomorrow night, but he’s hit back at some sections of supporters that have criticised the club’s start to the campaign.

He said: “Someone sent me something and it half made me chuckle, but half think, hang on, what are people seeing?

“It was nothing really. It was more to do with being tactically not good enough and inept, and relying on other people to be tactically good.

“That’s the kind of thing that surprises me and shocks me because it doesn’t matter what we do, someone always wants to be negative about it.”

Luton are still chasing their first win at Kenilworth Road this season and they have a home double-header this week to try to rectify that, starting with the Sky Blues and then Blackburn Rovers.

“It’s been a difficult start and difficult to stomach, really,” said Jones on the Hatters’ home results, adding: “I keep saying, Birmingham we should’ve won, Preston was close, Sheffield United we were excellent and in the last game we weren’t so good.

“I’m probably slightly more honest than I should’ve been. I’ve learnt that at times. There’s been a few comments that fans have made that, I’m not saying have annoyed me, but really surprised me.

“I’ve been brutally honest because I believe that’s what fans want. Fans can’t be kidded.

“When I make changes, I don’t laud myself when they come good. The other day, the changes didn’t make us any weaker in any way and I came out and suggested something. But I was a bit more honest than I probably should’ve been. Maybe that’s something I’ve got to learn.

“I never blame players. I went through a year of horrific results at the club I’ve been at. Never once did I blame players. I took everything on myself.

“Maybe I’m too honest because, tactically, a few people have questioned whether we can do stuff. Tactically, we’ve been outstanding, because we’ve had to be.

“We’ve been outstanding from the duration of 2016. We played the diamond and ripped teams apart and got two promotions off the back of it. Tactically, fantastic.

“Since we’ve come back, we’ve had to be tactically brilliant and we are. So, if anyone questions us, tactically, that kind of gets to me a little bit. And it’s an easy cheap shot after a manager coming out and being brutally honest.

“I don’t need to be that honest, but I am, because that’s who I am.”

  1. After study a few of the blog posts on your website now, and I truly like your way of blogging. I bookmarked it to my bookmark website list and will be checking back soon. Pls check out my web site as well and let me know what you think.

  2. Come on, NJ – it goes with the territory. There aren’t many seats hotter than a football manager’s – especially when his team loses. Football fans are passionate. In some cases their love for the team goes back decades and – unlike players and, of course, managers – they don’t move on. And I can see that it’s obviously difficult when you get a mike stuck under your nose and you have to say something in the heat of the moment, but that’s just the way it is these days. I expect you’d rather just walk away and lick your wounds! I must admit I’ve had the occasional niggle, including a bit of a go at you after Wigan because I thought you got your subs wrong. I’ve also said plenty of complimentary things over the years and I still think that, despite the Stoke escapade, we’re lucky to have you. So grin and bear it! Thump Coventry tomorrow and you’ll be a saint!

    • He’s not gonna let it go. Picking fights with fans is never sensible. But he’s keeping it going.

I’m with you. I’ve thought the football this season at home has been dull. Away it’s been fine on the counter. But we need more fun at home. It’s not wrong to want that. I’m also with you that he should focus on getting some goals and tonking cov. If we lose it could be interesting for him now he’s keeping on with his dislike of things some of us say.

I don’t know NJ at all but I’d be amazed by the way if he ever tones it down. Doesn’t seem to be in his nature.
