Graeme Jones has revealed the advice that helped Harry Cornick score against Bristol on Saturday, with the manager instructing the forward to hit it as hard as he could.
The pep-talk came after the former Bournemouth man missed two one-on-one chances in training last week, an aspect of his finishing which has been hit and miss since he joined the club.
But against Bristol, Cornick collected an Izzy Brown through-ball, raced through on goal from the halfway line and, despite top scorer James Collins busting a gut to support, the attacker went it alone to bag his fourth goal of the campaign.
Jones revealed: “I spoke to Harry a little bit. There were two last Thursday in training that he missed, one-v-one with the keeper. I said to him, ‘Harry, sometimes it’s as simple as picking a corner and hitting as hard as you can.’
“Sometimes you’re looking for a trick or to stop. The top players will dink you or take the keeper down and that was the result of that, but he’s got the mentality. That’s all I spoke to him about. He had the same mentality against Barnsley – don’t hope to score, make sure you score, and he did.
“It’s another satisfying aspect but that has to become permanent in Harry’s play. I think he’s up to four goals now, so he’s progressing nicely.”
