Nathan Jones crowed over a “massive result” and “outstanding” performance to beat relegation rivals Huddersfield 2-0 and then said he was going to celebrate by seeing his newborn daughter.
Town closed the gap to Championship safety to two points with victory at the John Smiths Stadium courtesy of second half goals from Sonny Bradley and Elliot Lee.
It was a must-win game, with Jones admitting beforehand that Luton had to win at least three of their remaining four fixtures to stand a chance of avoiding relegation back to League One after one season.
“The big thing is the result. It’s a massive, massive result, a wonderful result, but I thought the performance was outstanding,” said Jones.
“I thought we had a real controlled performance. We scored a wonderfully taken goal, well-worked, the set-piece goal and then the second one gave us a real cushion.
“The result was everything, so as long as we won I would’ve taken any performance, but to do it in that manner, I’m thoroughly delighted.”
The victory – Luton’s best on the road all season – lifted them off the foot of the Championship table and now they must wait to see whether the team around them in pick up points in their matches tomorrow.
“Firstly, I’m going to spend a bit of time with my daughter, because she won’t recognise me if I don’t, so that’ll be nice, then whatever happens, happens,” said Jones, who has not seen his family for a week due to the congested fixture list.
“It would be brilliant if all the result could go for us. Whether that happens is another thing. All we can do is keep knocking on the door.”
