Jones: ‘We were outclassed, outplayed, out-thought’ by Reading

Graeme Jones admitted his Luton side were soundly beaten by Reading in a 3-0 Championship reverse, their fourth in a row.

They were 2-0 down at half time and then failed to have a shot on target in a dour second half display.

“I think we were outclassed, outplayed, out-thought,” the manager said afterwards.

“I’m not here to hide. I know today wasn’t good enough. Nobody needs to tell me. It’s the realisation of where we are, because that’s what we’ve got.”

Jones made four changes, dropping captain Sonny Bradley and handing Lloyd Jones his full Championship debut, with Callum McManaman, Jacob Butterfield and Luke Bolton also returning.

But the team failed to make an impression on the contest once Michael Morrison headed the opener on 22 minutes, from a corner, with a Martin Cranie volley their only effort on goal.

“When you get one shot on target it defines where you are,” Jones said, adding: “Previously, we’ve always been a threat. Today we weren’t. Now, we’ve conceded three goals and we’re not scoring, so we need to remember what we are.

“I’ve never wanted to concede the goals we’ve been conceding, so let’s go down to detail. A set-piece, we’re in possession in the final third, so it’s a transition, a counter-attack, and a mistake.

“It’s nothing about organisation, units or tactical. Everybody needs to take responsibility, every individual, me included, and we need to do something about it, because we’ve got a really, really heavy period coming up in two weeks’ time. That’s why the players are in tomorrow.

“There’s no hiding place, no rest for anybody. We have a responsibility to this football club and them supporters, who turned up today to support the group. I can assure you, we’re doing our best. At this minute in time we’re a little bit short.”

After the final whistle, Jones made a beeline for the away end, many of whom had left after Garath McCleary robbed Alan Sheehan to score the third on 79 minutes.

He said: “I’m not disappearing down the tunnel. I work my backside off every day to make Luton as good as we can be. At the minute it’s not working, so I wanted to face it up for that reason, nothing else.”
