Luton Town fans are relieved that Tom Lockyer will leave hospital toda and have also been left hoping for more good news over a hint in a club statement.
The 28-year-old collapsed in the early stages of Saturday’s Championship play-off final victory over Coventry City and was rushed to hospital in London.
A viral social media post by his dad immediately after Luton were confirmed as a Premier League team eased fears about the defender as he was photographed celebrating the triumph from his hospital bed.
However, a reportedly “frustrated” Lockyer has missed out on all the celebrations, both at Wembley and on Bank Holiday Monday as 20,000 fans filled Luton streets to welcome their heroes home on a victory parade.
But, last night the Hatters announced that their player of the season would be returning home later today.
While the first reaction of supporters was one of relief, the club’s statement also hinted at some further good news.
The defender is thought to be out of contract in the summer, but the Hatters release said he’ll be fit to take part in pre-season later in the summer.
The statement read: ‘We are so pleased to report that our central defender and multiple player of the year Tom Lockyer will be allowed to leave hospital and return home tomorrow.
‘The 28-year-old has been undergoing a series of tests at the Cavendish Clinic in London since collapsing in the early stages of Saturday’s Championship play-off final at Wembley and being carried off on a stretcher.
‘Tom was well enough to celebrate the penalty shoot-out win with his family at his bedside, as seen in images that have gone global since the historic Hatters victory over Coventry City.
‘The Welsh international has been a frustrated patient ever since, but has completed all the necessary medical tests and observations to be allowed home for a period of rest before the start of pre-season training, which he will be fit to take part in.
‘We would like to thank everyone for their messages of love and support for Locks, who has had a season to remember and proudly led the team out on Saturday, with his team-mates completing the job for him.
‘We can’t wait to see you back home at the Kenny with that trophy in your hands, Locks!’
It left some eagle-eyed fans to speculate whether their captain fantastic has already penned a new deal to lead the club into their first top-flight season for 31 years.
Best wishes Tom – you are the best. Get back to rude good health ASAP. COYH!
