Ten days short of the fourth anniversary of his last Luton brace, against Accrington Stanley, the midfielder’s eyes lit up when Cauley Woodrow cut back from the by-line straight into his path. And while his first goal was a cute and clever strike, his second was a thunderous top-corner rocket.
“They were two great finishes,” said boss Edwards, adding: “I thought his goals were brilliant. We want the eights to be chipping in with goals and they were two really important ones today.
“The second one, even though it went in with a lot of power was a really concentrated side-foot finish. It was a real good contact. But two great finishes though, different types of goals.
“The first one he found that corner, the side net, really well. It was the only place it could go in with all the bodies in the way.
“The second one was a lovely finish. I don’t know which one I enjoyed more. That first goal was a really important one, the equaliser and the timing of it, and then to get a two-goal cushion in a game like that was great as well. I’m really pleased for him.”
It was the first time under Edwards that Luton have scored three at Kenilworth Road, which made for relaxed viewing come the final whistle.
But, explaining his side’s lacklustre opening, where they didn’t kick into any semblance of action until going a goal down, the manager said: “We talked about the expectancy today. We had to deal with that. I know I appealed for the atmosphere but it was never going to be like it was in the previous home game.
“So there’s expectancy. We’re third and they’re in the bottom three so just turn up and win, but we know it’s not that.
“We had had lots of control in the game but they were real threats with their individual quality on the counter-attack. We were a little bit open at times in the first half.
“When they got the first goal from a set-play, which is obviously unlike us, the job’s doubly difficult. The timing of the equaliser was key, I think. It gave everyone a lift, the crowd a lift and some belief for the boys as well.
“We were able to get into them and say, ‘look, we expected this’, and we were able to find a way in the second half.
“Today, I felt it was dangerous and we’d spoken openly to the boys about it. I don’t worry about us against Sheffield United, Sunderland away or Watford here. The lads are up for it, the crowd’s up for it and the environment and the atmosphere takes care of itself.
“These games are always dangerous and then to go 1-0 down, I thought we showed great character and belief in what we do as well, to find a way in the end.
“Now, I’m delighted, but at the time and during the game I think we all sensed it, it was a dangerous game.”
The victory put Town, for a few hours at least, four points clear of fourth-placed Middlesbrough and five off second-place Sheffield United, ahead of their late kick-offs.
While joining the automatic promotion party with Burnley will depend on slip-ups from the Blades, the Hatters are now nine points clear in the play-offs and two more points from their final five games should, realistically, confirm their place in the end-of-season lottery.
