Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu has played in four different divisions for Luton and been part of so much success across nine glorious years, but even for the midfielder, the derby day victory over Watford was a day like no other.
The Hatters have played twice since the 2-0 win over their arch-rivals, with the latest 3-1 victory over Blackpool coming courtesy of a first brace from the midfielder in almost four years.
That was the first game at Kenilworth Road since the derby, when the atmosphere was one of the most febrile it’s been since Mpanzu joined the club back in the non-league.
Though the outcome was the same, it’s fair to say the Seasiders clash on Monday couldn’t live up to the expectancy and excitement of hosting Watford for the first time in 17 years with fans in the stadium.
“It was a good one to get one over our bitter rivals, Watford. That one there was real sweet,” said Mpanzu.
For the Democratic Republic of the Congo international, the derby marked a surprise return to action, having recovered quickly from a potentially season-ending injury sustained at Sheffield United 21 days earlier. He made his return count with an assist for Gabriel Osho’s opener, plus a top-drawer performance.
Speaking in his first interview since Town claimed the bragging rights over their neighbours, Mpanzu said: “The day was crazy. Obviously, they (fans) came in their Harry Potter buses. I thought we played well.
“The fans were electric, I can’t lie to you. The flares, everything, the noise, it was bouncing. I don’t think they played particularly well.
“Gabe got the first goal and it was good play between me and Locks. He got redemption from the last time, he got a red card. It was good for Gabe to get a goal, and Al Campbell just put the cherry on top.
“I think we thoroughly deserved that win and got it for the fans and I know the fans went home happy.
“It was good to get one on Watford and distance ourselves from them.”
Despite losing 4-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this term, though Mpanzu was injured, Town have since opened up a 15-point gap on the Hornets and they look poised for at least the Championship play-offs, where they sit third with a nine-point buffer.
The midfielder said: “Every season we’ve just finished higher than we have the season before, so to now be in the same league as Watford and beat them thoroughly – obviously, the beginning of the season (at Vicarage Road) wasn’t too great – but we’re now in a position where any team we play, we feel we can beat them.”
And the 29-year-old is in particularly buoyant mood after staring down the barrel of a second season where he had to sit out the play-offs with injury.
Asked if he thought his campaign was over after that injury at Sheffield United, Mpanzu said: “I can’t lie, I really did. It’s tough as it felt the same as it did last year against Huddersfield, but god willing it was good, only swelling.
“I came back quick, a surprise against Watford, but it’s good to be back in the team and firing us towards the top of the table.
“I prayed, mum prayed, dad prayed, it was all good, these things happen, but for me thankfully it wasn’t that long.”
That hasn’t stopped the midfielder from getting in the wars since his return, and he joked: “People are trying to hack me out! I don’t know if they’re targeting me.
“Everyone’s got knocks these last few weeks, we’re just trying to find our way through. I’m all good though, the body is holding up well at the moment.
“Hopefully, god willing, everything’s good and even in the whole squad, we’re getting through this and hopefully everyone’s fit and well until the end of the season.”
