Linus ‘Lightning’ Udofia says it’s a “dream come true” to battle for the British middleweight title live on Channel 5, and the boxer is aiming to bring home the crown to kick-start what could be a memorable month for Luton sport, with his beloved Hatters aiming for promotion to football’s Premier League.

The undefeated fighter (17-0, 9 KOs) will face Denzel Bentley, who is a former British champion, having stopped Mark Heffron inside four rounds in 2020 but losing his first defence against Felix Cash.

Udofia has previously held the English title, when he beat Tyler Denny in November 2019. But this televised clash, on May 13 at the O2 Indigo in London, will be the 28-year-old’s biggest to date as he aims to emulate the likes of hometown fighters Graham Earl and Billy Schwer in taking the Lonsdale belt, 19 and 30 years ago respectively.

A big fan of Luton Town FC, Udofia’s fight will be on the same night as the Hatters’ play-off semi-final first leg against Huddersfield at Kenilworth Road.

Speaking to Boxing Social, Udofia said: “The month of May could be incredible. I could win a British title and two weeks later a promotion push, the play-offs for the Premier League. Could you imagine Luton Town in the Premier League and have a British champion all in the same fortnight?

“It will mean everything. The British title is the most beautiful belt in boxing and it gives whoever wins it the right to go an represent their country at the world level. I can’t wait to go. It’s a very exciting time.”

“This is a massive fight for me. I’ve always wanted to box for the British title and to get the opportunity to do it headlining a big show on Channel 5 is a dream come true,” Udofia told Wasserman Boxing, adding: “I want to thank my promoters the Sauerland brothers at Wasserman and my manager Steve Goodwin for getting me into this position. Now, it’s time to show everyone what I can do.

“I’ve seen a lot of Denzel Bentley. He’s a good operator, he’s very slick and I think our styles are going to gel really well. This is going to be a good fight for the public.”

Bentley said: “I’m excited for this opportunity to box for the British Title again.

“I know my opponent, Linus Udofia, is a good boxer and it’s going to be a real 50-50 fight. I’m expecting a full-blooded, fan-friendly affair. I can’t wait till fight night. I’m itching to prove that I am still one of the best fighters in the division.”

Udofia also appeared on BBC Look East and said: “I’m dangerous. I’m very dangerous. I’m the kind of fighter that, matter what you do, I’ve got an answer for it. I feel I’ve got every tool to do the job.”
