Musicians from across Luton will come together for a free day of live music to raise money for the town’s foodbank ahead of Christmas.
We Shall Overcome Luton returns to The George II in Bute Street on Saturday (November 7), bringing together 11 acts for an afternoon and evening of performances in support of people experiencing financial hardship.
Organised by Frankie Prazer of Community Events Music Management, the event will begin at 2pm, with free admission and donations welcomed throughout the day.
The fundraising concert follows a previous We Shall Overcome event in Luton in January, which raised approximately £800 for Luton Foodbank.
Organisers are hoping to repeat that success as families face the additional financial pressures that can come with the run-up to Christmas.
Frankie said: “Christmas should be a time when families can come together, but sadly, for some people, it can also be one of the hardest times of the year.
“When we think about Christmas, we often think about presents, celebrations and spending time with loved ones. But there are families in our own town who are worrying about something as simple as putting a meal on the table. Nobody should have to face that worry, especially at Christmas.”
The event is part of the wider We Shall Overcome movement, which brings musicians and communities together under the message ‘Solidarity, Not Charity’.
Frankie added: “That’s why events like We Shall Overcome Luton are so important to us. We might not be able to solve everyone’s problems, but if we can come together and raise some money to help people through a difficult time, then it’s worth every bit of effort.
“We raised around £800 at our January event, and we’re hoping the people of Luton will once again come out and support us.
“Every performer is giving their time, and we’re grateful to everyone involved. Whether somebody donates a pound, buys some merchandise or simply helps spread the word, it all makes a difference.
“At the end of the day, it’s about looking after one another. That’s what community means to me.”
The line-up will feature a mixture of acoustic music, electronic performances and live bands, with Callum Pettigrew opening the event at 2pm.
Other performers include RB Phillips, Ryan Prazer, Mariam Daniel, Joe Zux, Analogue Electronic Whatever, Luton Ukimaniacs, Grae J. Wall & Los Chicos Muertos, Shotgun Marmalade, Tinkers Lane and Chub Rub.
Visitors will also be able to buy fundraising merchandise, including limited-edition tote bags for £10 and mugs for £8, alongside badges, stickers and keyrings. Proceeds will go towards supporting Luton Foodbank.
The event is sponsored by the National Education Union Luton Branch, with support from The George II, the performers and volunteers.
Frankie said: “We’re grateful to the National Education Union Luton Branch, The George II and every single artist who has offered their time. We would love to see the venue full of people enjoying the music and supporting a local cause. If we can help make Christmas a little less worrying for even a few families, then we will have achieved something worthwhile.”
