Luton rail passengers told to make essential journeys only as heatwave hits

Train passengers using Luton Station are being urged to travel only if absolutely necessary this week as a rare red extreme heat warning threatens widespread disruption across the rail network.

Thameslink Railway says services will be reduced today (Wednesday) and Thursday as trains are forced to run at lower speeds to maintain safety during the forecast heatwave.

The warning comes at a particularly difficult time for rail users in Bedfordshire, with services already disrupted following last week’s fatal train collision near Bedford. As the recovery operation takes place, there will be no northbound services at all between Leagrave and Bedford all week.

And passengers travelling south from Luton are being warned to expect fewer trains, longer journey times and potentially crowded services as operators introduce emergency timetables.

Gatwick Express services will be suspended from early afternoon on both days, although passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport from Luton will still be able to use Thameslink and Southern services.

Train operators say the reduced timetable is designed to improve reliability during the extreme temperatures, but additional delays, alterations and cancellations remain possible at short notice.

Jenny Saunders, customer service director for Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express, said: “I’m sorry for the disruption this is going to cause but with such extreme temperatures forecast, we have to run fewer trains, more slowly to keep services safe.

“I’d really urge our customers to think about what’s best for them and to travel only if absolutely necessary on Wednesday and Thursday.

“If you do have to catch a train, then consider travelling earlier or later in the day when it is cooler, or delaying your trip to later in the week. Please bring lots of water, wear sunscreen and a hat, and have a backup plan in case of disruption.”

The restrictions are being introduced because extreme heat can cause rails to expand and overhead power equipment to become less reliable, increasing the risk of infrastructure failures.

Jake Kelly, deputy chief executive of Network Rail, said: “Extreme heat can have a significant impact on the railway, so safety must come first.

“We’re asking passengers to check before travelling on Tuesday, and only travel if absolutely essential on Wednesday and Thursday if they are going to, from or within the red warning zone as temperatures are expected to peak.

“If you do need to travel in this area or outside of it where it will still be hot, please plan ahead, allow extra time and take necessary precautions, such as carrying water, to stay safe.”

Passengers travelling from Luton are being advised to check journey planners before leaving home as timetables may change at short notice.

Those who decide not to travel can claim a full refund for Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express tickets dated Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Rail operators say Friday’s timetable is still under review and will depend on how weather forecasts develop over the coming days.
