Traffic wardens are now working until midnight in parts of Luton in a move aimed at tackling irresponsible evening parking.
Luton Council has introduced later shifts for a number of its parking enforcement officers, officially called Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs), with the patrols operating on a rotational basis in the town centre, Bury Park and along Marsh Road.
The new arrangements came into effect on 19 September, extending parking enforcement beyond the previous 9pm finish.
The council said the additional patrols are intended to improve compliance with existing parking restrictions, road safety and access routes during the evening.
It said particular attention would be paid to vehicles parked in contravention of restrictions which could obstruct access for emergency vehicles, including fire engines.
Councillor Adrees Latif, portfolio holder for parking operations at Luton Council, said: “We have listened closely to residents and local business owners who are frustrated by irresponsible night-time parking.
“This targeted change means some of our CEOs are now working later shifts in areas where we know there are particular parking issues. We recognise that car parking is a major concern for residents, particularly in densely populated areas where available parking can be under pressure, and this is something we are looking at.
“Existing parking restrictions remain in place during the evening, and enforcement action may be taken where vehicles are parked in contravention of them, helping to keep our streets safe.”
The council said the later patrols would operate on a rotational basis rather than meaning enforcement officers would necessarily be present in all three areas every night.
