Luton manager Graeme Jones says he won’t be breaking the club’s transfer record again before the deadline tomorrow, but is hoping for a busy day despite a frustrating week in the market.
The Hatters have already signed seven players this summer, including Croatian international goalkeeper Simon Sluga, whose transfer broke the £1million mark for the first time the club’s history.
Jones is hoping to add up to three new recruits before the window closes at 5pm tomorrow, though it’s looking unlikely one of those will be former striker Isaac Vassell, who appears on the verge of a move to Cardiff.
With the six other outfield players all signed as free agents, when asked if there will be big money spent in the next 24 hours, Jones said: “I don’t think we’ll be breaking the transfer record, no, on anybody, but I’m delighted with Simon, delighted with our business for him. It doesn’t really matter what you pay as long as you get the product right.”
Jones called his pre-match press conference a day early in order to concentrate on transfer business tomorrow and he admitted: “I hope to have a busy time, I still think we need two or three in to help the group of players that’s here to make sure when the window closes we’re strong until the first of January.
“I wouldn’t say there’s anything imminent, it’s been a little bit frustrating over the last four or five days, but we are definitely on the case with two or three, so we’ll see where that takes us.”
Jones wouldn’t reveal what positions he’s looking to strengthen in but said: “We’ve been speaking to a number of clubs about their players, list A, B and C, so we’ll just see in the next 24 hours. It will be no more than three, though we’ll probably sign five now.”
