Nathan Jones says Luton’s transfer business is not finished, with the manager looking to fill up to five positions before the Championship season starts in just over a month.
Town have already signed goalkeeper Matt Macey, wide man Alfie Doughty and striker Cauley Woodrow, while they’ve lost Kal Naismith (Bristol City), Danny Hylton (Northampton) and Peter Kioso (Rotherham).
The Hatters are still waiting on whether Robert Snodgrass will extend his Luton stay but, in the meantime, Jones is hoping to add more outfield recruits.
“We’re looking to bring in two midfield players and one attacking player, and we’d like to sign another defender as well,” said the manager, adding: “That’s what we want to do, that will be us done then, effectively you could see four coming in, we’ll have to see, we’ve got big numbers now, so we’ll see, one or two would need to go out, but we’re in a real strong position for a first week of pre-season.
“All we’re looking to do now is add quality, not just bodies, we’ve got bodies, we’ve got a fantastic squad already, but we still want to push boundaries and get better, because historically, we’ve got better every year, to do that from last year, is going to take a big push and to do that, we just need a little bit more quality and keep adding.”
In the goalkeeping department, James Shea will be injured for an extended period of time, and with only Harry Isted on the books, Luton have swooped early to bring Macey back to the club from Hibernian, after his short loan spell from Arsenal in 2017.
Jones said: “We want to strengthen, we’ve managed to bring Matt Macey in, god willing there’s going to be one imminent as well.
“So, we’ve now got three goalkeepers, plus James Shea who’s injured at this point in time, so the goalkeeping department we’ve improved that, so what we want to do is come out of this window in a lot stronger position than when we went into it.”
Town suffered a spate of bad luck last season with keepers after they sold record signing Simon Sluga to Ludogorets in Bulgaria. Jed Steer came in on loan from Aston Villa but suffered a series Achilles injury. Shea the got injured and the club had to bring in Matt Ingram from Hull on an emergency loan.
Asked if a temporary deal might be an option, with Shea to return later in the season, Jones said: “We don’t like taking loans here, so if it’s going to be a loan, it will be a loan with a view to do it permanently.
“We want to move forward continually and that’s what we’ve always done, we’ve brought in a relatively young keeper, 27-year-old Matt Macey who we know, we also know he’s nowhere near the ceiling he can reach.
“(He’s a) real good size, good presence, really hungry to do well and that was the key factors in us singing him, then we hope to bring in someone that if it’s a loan, it will be a loan with a permanent, or another permanent signing, depending on what the scope is to do that.”
