‘Only thing that can stop us is ourselves,’ says Pelly as Luton aim for Premier League

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu believes the only thing that can stop Luton this season is themselves as they go in hunt for a place in the Premier League.

The midfielder fired a double to help down Blackpool 3-1 on Monday, which kept Town third in the Championship and looking odds on for at least a play-off spot.

The Hatters had to come from a goal down to do it, as they put in a lacklustre first-half display that was only rescued by Mpanzu’s sweet equaliser with the last kick of the half.

Luton got to the play-offs last term but injuries, including to the midfielder, decimated the squad and they failed to make the final.

But this term, Town have a stronger squad and fewer major injury worries with even Mpanzu recovering unexpectedly from an injury that last month initially threatened to end his season.

Asked if this end-of-seaosn run-in feels different, the midfielder said: “Yeah, because every season we’ve gotten stronger. We’ve got a strong unit, we’re playing well, we’re third in the league, and right now, it seems that nothing’s going to stop us.

“The only thing that can stop us is ourselves, i.e. the first half (against Blackpool), so we’ve got to eradicate that and make sure we’re on point every single game.

“As Rob (Edwards, manager) said, complacency’s going to beat us and we had that in the first half, but the second half we turned it around. We scored three goals and were unfortunate to concede from a set piece, which we’ve been good at all season.

“Three points is what we need and hopefully three points is what we’re going to get on Saturday.”

A victory at Rotherham on Saturday will edge Luton even closer to confirming at least a play-off berth and Mpanzu said: “It’s been a real good last couple of years and the dream is to go to the Premier League.

“We’ve got to take it game by game, but we are looking forward to what we can do. The club’s been great, a new stadium is trying to be built, training facilities have been great, we’ve got a new gym, so we’re trending in the right direction.

“We’ve just got to keep pushing and see what we can do now.”
