In my final column of last season I mentioned how the summer had the potential to be a very exciting one with the players that could potentially come in.

We are only four games into the season if you include the Stevenage cup game, and I think it is fair to say that the summer signings are already delivering in terms of quality on the pitch and excitement for us in the stands.

Eight men came through the door at Kenilworth Road in the summer – Fred Onyedinma, Reece Burke, Allan Campbell, Henri Lansbury, Carlos Mendes-Gomes, Amari’i Bell, Cameron Jerome and Admiral Muskwe, and seven of them have been in competitive action already.

When I spoke to Nathan Jones on the first Luton Town Supporters’ Trust podcast of the new season the thing he stressed was the extra athleticism he has recruited and we’re seeing that and some already.

Bell looks a wonderful acquisition at left-back. He is a Luton Town full-back. He gets forward and compliments the attacks nicely, as we saw on Tuesday evening, but he also has the pace and power to do his defensive role.

Moving further up the pitch, Onyedinma looked sensational in the season opener against Peterborough, a match in which we got a first sighting of Muskwe, who has gotten better each time we have seen him and looks a very good signing.

In the centre of the park, Campbell was probably our best player at West Brom while Lansbury changed the game there and absolutely bossed the centre of the park at Barnsley on Tuesday. Jerome already has a goal to his name at Stevenage and looks a very handy option too.

We have only seen Mendes-Gomes for any period of time at Stevenage and while he didn’t set the world alight the pre-season matches highlighted there is a serious talent there. We’ve yet to see Burke in a competitive game but he too has a decent pedigree.

Having seen the signings in action and the athleticism and front-footed approach they provide us I’m even more excited about what we could do this season.

One thing is for sure, we are going to be a side that is great to watch and none of us can complain about that.

Let’s enjoy the ride. It promises to be a great one!

  1. I agree with your assessments. We look a good team and it does look like to me we will achieve hopefully a play off place. We now have serious pace up front and this team excites me!
