It’s now 18 visits and 37 years since Luton last won a football match at QPR as they wasted a host of chances, while their west London bogey team scored with both their shots on target.
Town were in the contest throughout, but their quality was severely lacking, drawing an infuriating blank as they had done in their last two defeats, albeit showing far more ambition than against Preston and Stoke.
Manager Nathan Jones said: “We came here last year and we were excellent. Today we have had 16 shots and better chances than them, to be honest – much, much better – but we just haven’t showed any quality.
“For the first goal, we’ve got to defend that better, it’s a bit of a goalkeeping error, and then there’s an error from the officials for the second – it’s a foul our way and we don’t get it. We’ve got to defend better than that.
“They have had two opportunities on goal and scored. We have to show better quality than that because we created enough today to have got something out of the game.”
But despite a good start, keeper Simon Sluga’s rush of blood to the head allowed Chris Willock an easy lobbed finish ten minutes in as the Rs went from back to front in a lightning counter. Had the Croatian stopper not rushed recklessly off his line then the forward would’ve had to beat Allan Campbell first before even thinking about a shot, but Sluga was caught in no man’s land.
Then, with Luton starting the second half on the front foot, and Tom Lockyer and Kal Naismith both going close in a matter of seconds – with the Welshman seeing a header cleared off the line and the Scot nodding into he side netting from close range – Rangers stuck again.
There was a bizarre foul awarded against visiting skipper Sonny Bradley before the second goal, but Town still had plenty of chances to clear their lines and didn’t. And it just had to be Charlie Austin that punished them. The former England striker hadn’t scored for 11 games, but he’s nailed on to net against Town when in a hooped shirt. He hasn’t missed yet and his was a composed header – a third in three matches against the Hatters – that emphasised the difference between the two teams.
Luton created chances in both halves but wasted all of them from Elijah Adebayo’s third minute opportunity – when he robbed Jimmy Dunne but was denied by keeper Sent Dieng, with Rob Dickie denying Harry Cornick’s follow up – to misses from Admiral Muskwe and multiple wayward blasts from Fred Onyedinma and Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu.
The latter’s late skewed shot was symptomatic of the lack of clinical finishing in Luton’s ranks, with just three shots from 16 on target.
Jones said: “I’m proud of masses of our performance, but if you don’t keep clean sheets you won’t win games at this level. We’ve been very good at that. We’re evolving into a very aggressive side, but we can’t do that at the cost of results.
“We’re disappointed. Realistically, it looks like a comfortable 2-0, but we’ve only got to take one of our 16 chances and it’s a different game. If we take two of our chances, it’s a totally different game, but we didn’t and that was the thing.
“There was masses to be positive about and that’s what we have to concentrate on, but we have to tighten up because, if we don’t, then good players and good things will punish you with one opportunity.”
So, Luton were left only with what might have as they slumped, frustratingly, to back-to-back Championship defeats for the first time this term.

Can’t comment on the first goal as we weren’t allowed in till the 23rd minute. Thanks QPR and the Met for ripping us off.
Second goal was against the run of play but it was yet another counterattack type goal. And we didn’t play well enough after going 2-0 down.
Sorry to say this but I’m really not sure what question Cameron Jerome is the right answer to on the pitch. Other than maybe “who should come on when we need someone who doesn’t get near the ball or get involved at all.” But he isn’t at fault for yesterday.
And I think it’s time to scrap the 5-3-2. We are regularly getting over run in midfield and our fullbacks are also struggling to defend counterattacks in that system.
But there were more important things than the football yesterday. The policing and stewarding at QPR was yet again a throw back to the 1980s. We were treated like we were animals. It’s no wonder then that some reacted to it as if they were. So many police horses, dogs and officers. Half the Met must have been there. And according to those officers I spoke to it was at QPR’s request that they forced us to walk a very long way round (great when you’ve got an older friend with you who is less mobile), get singled filed in twice just to get into the ground and then to leave one young kid to deal with anyone who might have been annoyed by that when they finally go to the turnstiles. That poor kid got thrown under the buss by his employer. The pay him shit money and give him no support.
And all the heavy handed treatment didn’t stop trouble. We got told by stewards on the walk to keep silent because qpr fans had had a ruck earlier. There were fights after too, and we walked passed a guy lying passed out on the Uxbridge road with blood pouring out of his head after. He had a lot of police and paramedics around him. Fingers crossed he’s ok. And if it was a result of trouble that he was involved with, hopefully he also learns not to do it again.
As said, treat people as if they’re animals, and some will react to that. This always happens when we go to QPR. If they don’t want to treat us properly cos they don’t think they can trust us then from now on the match has to be Saturday midday. Sod Sky. If it’s not safe (which is all the ridiculous level of policing and stewarding can suggest) then it needs to be early before anyone can drink. Or make QPR play behind closed doors or without away fans and no ability to let home fans use the School Lane end.
I really hope we treat them much better when they come to us. But there is also a small element of me that hopes we treat them even worse.
