Glen Rea has now joined Cheltenham Town on loan with Luton boss Rob Edwards urging him to enjoy his football without worrying about his Hatters future.
It’s been 13 months since the midfielder played for the Championship club after finding first-team opportunities limited. He moved to Wigan Athletic on loan in the January 2022 transfer windwo to get some game time, but four appearances in he suffered a serious knee injury which saw him go under the knife.
A loan deal was announced during the January transfer window but on the basis that Rea continued his rehabilitation with Luton and played some practice matches with them before joining Cheltenham.
The 28-year-old featured for Town’s Under-21s in midweek, getting 90 minutes against Reading, having also played against Biggleswade United in the Beds Senior Cup and Chelsea U21s in a friendly.
Rea is believed to be out of contract in the summer, but asked what the future holds for the midfielder, Edwards said: “It’s important for him, but I don’t want to put any unnecessary pressure on him. He’ll be doing that himself anyway.
“It’s about now getting himself back playing first-team football and let’s not worry or think too far ahead the moment.
“He just needs to get back playing because he’s been through a tough time over a good few years, has shown a lot of mental strength and all I just want him to do is come back, enjoy his football and go and help Cheltenham for now, and then we can look at his situation once he gets some games under his belt.
“But all I want him to think about is just enjoying his football and being back out on the pitch.”
