‘We will look to right that wrong,’ says Jones of defeats to bogey side Birmingham

Progression continues to be the mantra for Luton this season, with the first chance to assess that coming on Saturday when boss Nathan Jones is aiming to atone for two uncharacteristic defeats to Birmingham City last term.

Town host the Blues travel at Kenilworth Road for the Championship opener having lost 5-0 and 3-0 in a campaign where they made the play-offs, while City languished nearer the bottom of the table.

But Birmingham are something of a bogey side for Luton, who have won just two times in their past eight clashes. But after strengthening his squad in the transfer market during this shortened summer period, Jones is out to make amends.

“We like progression so the first progression we can do this season is not get beat by Birmingham because it happened twice last year,” said the Hatters boss.

“It was disappointing results against Birmingham and the first game came really unexpectedly, the second game I can only put down to the disruption of the game as such.

“We will look to right that wrong but Birmingham will have their own motivation, a new manager (John Eustace) who is a really good guy so they will have high hopes at the start of the season and we want to continue where we left off.”

Luton have finished higher than the previous campaign in every season that Nathan Jones has been at the club, beginning in League Two in 2016.

But finishing sixth last term and reaching the Championship play-offs for the first time ever, will be the Welshman’s hardest task yet to improve on.

He said: When you set high bars you have to maintain and clear them. That is what we do, that is the ultimate goal.

“We know it is always going to be difficult and we have to be realistic, we’re not suddenly going to have a meteoric rise from 12th to sixth to first, let’s be realistic.

“We will strive for that, but whether that is achievable in the short term is another thing. We want progression, we had our goal-setting meeting this morning and we have to try and at least equal what we did last year and then try and go one better.”

He added: “The start of the season is always exciting. There are expectations, aspirations and all those things but we’ve come around really quickly. It seems like a whirlwind since the final game at Huddersfield on May 16th. It has come around really quickly but we’re ready to go.“
