Luton boss Jack Wilshere has given a hint that new signings will be on the way soon, with transfer negotiations progressing well with up to two players.

Kasey Palmer is the player on most Town fans’ lips, with reports that a deal has been agreed with Hull City and that confirmation could come soon, though the Hatters boss said “at the moment” he’s not a Town player.

Luton have already signed Bolton skipper George Johnston earlier this summer, while tying Jordan Clark and Liam Walsh down to new deals.

Yesterday, Elijah Adebayo parted ways with the Hatters after five-and-a-half years at the club, when his contract expired, and Wilshere made it clear soon after the season finished that the club will be looking to move on some players this summer.

But talking about incomings, Wilshere said: “We’re close with two. Then we’ve got a couple scheduled meetings for next week, but this has always happened over the whole of the summer.

“I’ve met loads of players, some that have decided to go to other clubs. But you always have to be in them conversations if you’re serious.

“Since January, the ones that we didn’t get, I’ve had a relationship with them players and been in contact with them, same as the recruitment team with their agents.

“It’s an ongoing process, but we’re not far away with a few.”

Two of Town’s standout performers at the tail end of last term were loan signings, with Palmer and Manchester City’s Emilio Lawrence impressing in orange.

While there hasn’t been a huge amount of deals done in League One so far, Wilshere offered one explanation.

He said: “I know there is a lot of loans that happen in League one. With the World Cup being on, and a lot of the top clubs having players there, that then gives young players more responsibility when they go back to their club. So I think that will probably be a reason as well, [that] it’s a little bit slow.

“I think there will start to be some movement. Obviously, some clubs came down, Leicester, Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford, who will have a little bit of more money, probably than most clubs, so they’ll be looking to act.

“I thought it would be slow and then it picked up a little bit. Now it’s probably slowed down a little bit.

“So, yeah, we just always have to be ready and not really focus on anyone else. Since the January window shut, we created a really good process, I think, that is understanding the parameters that we can spend and what we can use.

“It’s given us some players out of there [in the market], and now we’re in contact with a lot of them players, but also waiting for the, their club to give permission.”
