Nathan Jones backed chief executive Gary Sweet’s claim that Luton could be a Premier League side next year and says the Hatters won’t shy away from the ultimate ambition.
Excitement and anticipation has risen with the team up the Championship table, to where they currently sit in the play-off places, off the back of a five-game unbeaten streak.
That was matched off the pitch last night as Sweet addressed Luton Council planners to tell them how vital the Hatters’ new Power Court stadium development is, not only to the club’s top-flight ambitions, but the “resurgence” of the town itself.
And manager Jones, who leads his team to Preston on Saturday, threw his support behind the ambitious claim that Town could reach the big time this term.
“We’re not here to now suddenly stagnate or plateau as a Championship club and remain in the Championship for the next ten years. We don’t want to do that,” said the Town manager.
“We have ambitions of being a Premier League side. We’ve always said that. How we go about that – we have to be bold, brave, play well and everything has to come together.
“But that doesn’t add any pressure to the pressure we put on ourselves anyway. We believe we will be (a Premier League team).
“How long that takes, you can’t say because (the Championship) is such a tough league. There are so many big clubs, big budgets, but how we bridged that gap is with work, recruitment, good people, continuity and everything. Then, with a belief in what we do and that’s how we bridge the gap.”
While last night’s planning meeting was about modifications to the Power Court site other than the stadium, such as more homes and a better plan for the River Lea, Sweet did say that a detailed application for Luton’s new 17-500-seater home will be submitted in the first half of 2022, with spades in the ground next year too.
Asked if he is excited about the prospect of Luton finally realising their 66-year-old dream of moving to a new stadium, Jones said: “Absolutely. We’ve been excited for a while. Without being disrespectful, the area needs that development.
“Luton’s a fantastic place, a wonderfully cosmopolitan place, with real good history and a constant influx of people from far and wide, but it needs a lot to happen to the town, bit of a regeneration. We know that, everyone knows that, it’s not being disrespectful.
“It’s close to London, and close to very expensive places like Harpenden and St Albans. It’s the next one and it needs that to keep up and this football club is at the heart of the community.
“So, to do that and bring everyone together with this development, it’s just wonderful. It does need that.
“Gary’s very passionate. He’s not doing it so he can feather his nest. Gary’s doing it because he genuinely cares, first and foremost, about the football club. Secondly, about the area, and those go hand-in-hand.”
And Jones revealed he’s been helping to shape parts of the new stadium with Sweet and his 2020 Developments team.
“Gary’s passionate about it and he’s asked us, ‘take ideas from other people. Let us know what’s good, what’s bad and what things flow,’ the manager said.
“There are good and bad things with every stadium, so we want to get it right, for the supporters but also everyone who works there, for media, for everyone. And Gary’s really passionate about getting it right. Once everything is constructed, the details need to be spot on and I’m sure Gary, with the help of a lot of good people, will produce a stadium that’s wonderful.”
