Luton’s goal hero against Cardiff believes the Hatters are starting to become a team that can now haul themselves out of the Championship relegation picture.

The midfielder bagged his first goal for the club last night to down their fellow strugglers from Wales 2-1, slashing Town’s the deficit to the Bluebirds and safety to two points.

It was Luton’s first away victory since September, which completed a double over Cardiff this term.

Jordan Clark’s rocket got the Hatters on terms after Callum Chambers scored the opener for City. And then, with ten minutes remaining Aasgaard was in the right place at the right time to capitalise on a mistake by Cardiff defender Dimitrious Goutas to cap off a day in which he received his first international call-up to the Norwegian senior side.

“I think you could see out there, we’re gelling really well, lots of new signings, but we’re really becoming a team now and have picked up some really, really important points,” Aasgaard told the BBC.

One of the most important aspects of Town’s triumph was that it was the first time the club had come from behind to win on their travels in more than two years.

After Luton shaded a low-quality first half in the Welsh capital but then got hit by a scruffy opener five minutes into the second period.

However, Cardiff’s lead only lasted seven minutes and from there, save for City hitting the crossbar moments before Aasgaard’s winner, Town took control.

Even going 1-0 down, we showed real character to stay in it and show our quality in the end,” the 22-year-old said.

“If you get too emotionally attached,  especially before the game and during the game, you can get too down in these moments after being so high. But we were really calm and there’s just such a great character in this group.”

The Liverpool-born ace added: “It was massive. It’s hard to some up in words, but it’s an unbelievable result. The fans are amazing and the lads carried out the game plan really well and got a really big three points.”

Aasgaard was signed from Wigan in January and came with a pedigree for goals, having bagged 12 fgor the Latics, so on breaking his Luton duck, the midfielder said: “The ball fell nicely to me. You’ve just you gotta just try and say as calm as you can. [It’s a] big chance, just put my laces through it, across goal and, yeah, delighted that went in.

“I always try and carry as much confidence as I can and that [goal] will definitely help, but as a team effort I’m really happy that it paid off.”
