Jack Wilshere insists there is no reason for Luton Town to panic despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Leyton Orient after failing to convert a host of opportunities.
The Hatters had 23 shots and four clear-cut chances either side of Jamie Donley’s first goal for the club, but that was cancelled out by Jaze Kabia’s cracker on 34 minutes and Town ultimately had to settle for a point.
It followed a 2-0 victory last Wednesday against Stockport County which saw the Hatters instantly bounce back from a heavy 5-2 defeat at Mansfield Town that had left them with the leakiest defence in the division, at the time.
But after conceding ten goals in their first three League One games, they’ve now only been breached by a just one brilliant strike in the last two. So the manager was left to ponder issues at the other end instead, though he rejected the idea that Luton should be overly concerned about failing to convert their opportunities against Orient.
“I think that’s not one to panic on because of how clinical and how many goals we scored,” he said of netting 11 times in five league games so far, adding: “It felt like one of the games where we created the most chances we’ve created so far this season. So in terms of performance and process-wise, yeah, very good.
“But in recent games we’ve been really clinical. So I wouldn’t panic on that because we’ve got two number nines that have scored goals this season. We’ve got goals in the team from elsewhere. Kasey’s [Palmer] got a couple. I think we’ll be OK with that.”
While there was some frustration inside Kenilworth Road on Saturday, because of the amount of chances Town failed to take, with striker Nahki Wells missing three, Wilshere believes the performance against Orient was a positive, and that the characteristics shown will ultimately lead to better results.
“There are some non-negotiable things that you have to do at this level,” Wilshere said, adding: “We learned that lesson pretty harshly last week. You just have to do that.
“So if you run, if you outwork, if you outfight — I believe that how we try and play and the players that we’ve got, to be able to do that — more times than not, you’ll win games.”
He added: “And there’s always going to be a little bit of chaos, especially in this league, in League One, and especially against teams that want that and they’re good at that. But I believe if we play like that more often than not, we’ll win.”
