Jack Wilshere has been speaking with Emilio Lawrence and believes the Manchester City winger “could benefit” from returning to Luton on loan.

The Scottish Under-21 international had a successful second half of the season on loan at Kenilworth Road last term and hopes have been raised that he could reunite with the Hatters after he was left out of City’s pre-season tour to Asia.

Wilshere has enjoyed a summer in which he’s kept hold of key players Jordan Clark and Liam Walsh, while bringing Kasey Palmer in permanently after his loan spell last season.

George Johnston, Harrison Ashby and Callum Marshall have all been added, sparking optimism among fans for the coming League One campaign.

But Town are light on the left wing and Gideon Kodua played there today in the 1-0 pre-season defeat to Go Ahead Eagles, though Wilshere admitted afterwards that he sees the former West Ham man as playing more centrally.

Asked if Lawrence is in the manager’s plans, Wilshere said: “Everyone knows what I think of Emilio. For him, first of all, his development last year, it was clear for everyone to see. I think he could benefit from coming back. I know we can benefit from him coming back as well.

“But, at the moment, he’s a Man City player. He is working there in pre-season. But, yeah, everyone knows what I think of him.”

He added: “Emilio, I’ve been speaking with him. And yeah, we have a good relationship.

“I think that was probably in his head, always the plan that he would he would go on loan.

“I think it’s not necessarily a bad thing that he’s gone there and he’s probably now in week five of pre-season, working at a top class club with top class players. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“I think it is probably getting to the decision time for him. And yeah, we’re in that conversation.”
