5 things we learned from Cardiff 1 Luton 2 as Osho and Freeman open Town accounts

Luton were victorious on another sojourn to Wales when they came out 2-1 winners against Cardiff City. Here is what we took from the victory.

Freeman fires in first Town goal

After a goalless first half in which the Town had some good chances to open the scoring only to spurn them and head into the break goalless, they made up for it two minutes after the interval when Luke Freeman opened his account for the Hatters.

He got in front of his man to thump a perfect Fred Onyedinma cross into the back of the net. Freeman has been getting better and better with every outing and although an early caution meant that he couldn’t be as effective against a team who were his rivals during his Bristol City days, he made the contribution that counted the most.

Osho opens account on a night of firsts

Gabriel Osho was sent on as a second half substitute and his impact on the game was decisive. Brought on to shore things up in front of the back three, it was at the other end where Osho made his best contribution when he powered home a James Bree free kick that was so sexy you’d would want to take it home and marry it at the earliest opportunity! Amazingly, the strike, which turned out to be the winning goal, was a first in a Town shirt for the utility man. With his presence and quality it won’t be the last.

Five subs don’t just suit the big teams

Nathan Jones made no secret of his desire to have five substitutes or game-changers, to quote modern parlance, to call upon and we have seen just why in the last few matches. The last time Luton were in Wales two game-changers combined to put the match beyond their hosts when Cameron Jerome sent Carlton Morris through to score and here Osho came off the bench to score while fellow substitute Onyedinma ghosted past his man and set up the opening goal. With a frightening strength in depth within the Town squad we can expect lots more impact from those who join the match after it has begun.

Back three looks set in stone

Although Reece Burke left the field at half time, presumably due to a blow he took in the first half, the back three of the former Hull City man, Tom Lockyer and Dan Potts are performing admirably and it is hard to see how anyone breaks them up unless there is an injury down the line. Lockyer reads the game well and is happy to get physical with any striker within his vicinity, while throwing himself in front of anything that moves. Burke and Potts are solid defenders in their own right and are incredibly comfortable on the ball as well as an aerial threat in the opposing box. The trio are a perfect combination who can hopefully be together for some time as the Town continue to climb the Championship table.

Wonderful Wales a happy hunting ground

When Luton first re-entered the Championship trips to Wales were to be feared as they often ended in defeat and usually without scoring. That is no longer the case. They have now won four straight games across the Severn Bridge and Romaine Sawyers’ late consolation was the only time they have conceded in that period too. Although in an ideal world it would be a few hours closer, Wales is now a place where the Town thrive. Tidy.

  3. great performance last night. what a difference fred made. him and bree down the right look like they could cause anyone in this division a nightmare. but i also think fred could do it down the left. if we can have the same threat down the left as right, we’re going to be very hard to defend against this season.

we’re still susceptible on the counter but that was may be exacerbated by freeman’s yellow meaning he couldn’t tackle properly after that.

thought morris was too selfish in the first half. it’s just getting that balance right for a striker as you need to be selfish. but when someone is unmarked and has a tap in from the edge of the 6 yard box, pass it. the good thing about him is he looks confident to create space in tight situations where he’s closely marked.

adebayo in form gets on the end of a couple of crosses and hits the target at least. but he made some nice tracking tackles. so hopefully his confidence isn’t getting down. it’ll come.

and i’m with you, that back 3 looks good. the right blend of defensive capability but also happy to come out from the back to support their wing back in attack. whatever bradley’s issues, i wish him well. but those in the team aren’t letting themselves down.

and as for all those on other message boards who 2 weeks ago were saying the dressing room looks bad (without having actually been in the dressing room I’m guessing), admit you don’t know what you’re talking about! 2+2 doesn’t equal 5. just don’t expect people to be jumping all over each other when they’ve lost.
