Sonny Bradley is a doubt for tonight’s trip to Cardiff after boss Nathan Jones confirmed the Luton captain has been left out of the last two games on compassionate grounds.
The skipper started the first four games of the season, but was not in the squad for the 2-1 win at Swansea or Friday’s 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield United.
Town travel back to Wales for the second time this month, aiming to extend their unbeaten run to three games. Asked whether Bradley has been absent through injury, Jones said: “Sonny’s had a few personal issues, just family matters that we respect the privacy on that. A few little things have happened, so we’ve just given him some time off, that’s all.”
Friday’s televised draw saw a return to the squad of Fred Onyedinma, though he was an unused substitute.
The attacker hasn’t featured this season after missing the end of last term with a hamstring injury. Prior to the Sheffield game, Jones had said Alfie Doughty and Harry Cornick were available, though neither made the squad to face the Blades.
Asked whether any other injured players would be available, the manager said: “We might do, it’s just seeing the risk and reward.
“We risked Fred against Fulham because we needed it, we shouldn’t have, we should have kept him, that was a mistake, and then we’ve lost him really.
“He never really recovered over pre-season, so we’ve had to take that time.
“We’ve missed him, missed his pace, his game-changing ability, same with Harry, same with Doughty.
“We’ve got real athletes and quality to bring in.
“We’re in good shape, but those coming back in, those who have played, Allan Campbell I thought was magnificent again, Jordan Clark, Luke Freeman, we’re playing at a good level.”
While Bradley has been out, Dan Potts has deputised as captain and has really embedded himself in a defence that has begun proving they’re hard to beat.
Jones said: “To concede one goal against Sheffield United and Swansea away, you have to have defended well. I’m really pleased with the way that they’re defending and I’m really pleased with the levels we’re showing at the minute, in and out of possession.
“We’ll get better as well. I know we’re going to get better, I know we’ll be up to speed a little more. We’ll have these mad game-changers to come in because the squad is very, very strong.”
The result against Sheffield United belied an impressive, dominating performance as they look to continue their winning ways in the Welsh capital after last season beating the Bluebirds thanks to a Harry Cornick strike.
“I think we’re gathering a bit of pace now,” said Jones, adding: “We’re back to where we were and that’s the pleasing thing.”
