The Hatters picked up their first win of the Championship season with a convincing 2-0 win away to Swansea yesterday, as Allan Campbell opened the scoring and Carlton Morris bagged his first goal for the club. Here are our takeaways from the match.
Luton diamonds trump the Jacks
After what can only be described as a dismal display in Bristol on Tuesday evening, Luton went from the ridiculous to the sublime for their second soiree down the M4 this week as they put in a complete away performance which was far too good for a pass happy Swansea City side.
This was the Luton the Hatters faithful fell in love with last season. A high-energy, high-pressing, positive, front-footed performance where only Andy Fisher in the home goal denied the Town an even more convincing victory.
Luton rarely put two bad performances together in succession but this one was particularly special and deserving of a first win of the campaign.
Terrific Tom takes his chance
The last time Tom Lockyer was seen in a Town shirt he was finding the top corner against Newport. Annoyed after that game that he and his team-mates didn’t take the chance they had to impress Nathan Jones, the defender certainly doesn’t have those regrets after this match.
Selected at the heart of the defence instead of Sonny Bradley, the Wales International was a colossus, leaving Swans’ striker Michael Obafemi to feed off the lightest of scraps. That middle position of the three at the back was designed for someone with Locks’ defensive attributes and he shone there. More performances like this and the former Charlton man could be marking Harry Kane in Qatar in the World Cup in November. Superb from the popular Welshman.
Campbell continues to impress
If ever a game on the Championship schedule was ideal for Allan Campbell it was Swansea away. Against a midfield who pass the ball as often as Boris Johnson tells lies, the energetic midfielder was in his element chasing each home player down and snapping at their ankles. In fact, it would be a surprise if he isn’t on the team coach still snapping away at ankles such was the regularity he did it throughout the 90 minutes. If that wasn’t enough the Scotland international fired the Town ahead with a rifle of a shot from 20 yards in the first half.
It wasn’t lost on the 600 or so fans in the away end who serenaded the Scot to many a rendition of Whigfield’s Saturday Night. We very much liked the way he moved throughout this one!
Potts leads by example once again
This wasn’t the first time Dan Potts took the armband in the absence of Bradley and it wasn’t the first time he led by example either. Alongside Lockyer he was every bit as immense, heading away anything that came his way in the air and throwing himself in front of anything lower down.
The defender, who prior to Campbell’s opener was the only league scorer for the Hatters this term, nearly doubled his tally for the campaign with a brilliant header in the opening period only for an equally as good save to keep him out. With every game that passes by Potts looks more and more assured on the left of the back three.
The floodgates could be about to open for Morris
Luton were in control of the match at 1-0 but the game was put beyond Swansea when Carlton Morris danced past the home defence to fire in a second and wrap up the three points for the visitors.
Played through by Cameron Jerome in what was an identical build up to the winner scored here by Harry Cornick last year, twinkle toes Morris got the ball onto his left foot with a quick stepover, showing his turn of pace and with half a yard on the defender thundered an unstoppable strike into the far corner. After a frustrating start to the season for the attacker, you sense the floodgates might be about to open for the summer recruit.
Clark cruises through battle of top midfielders
We’ll finish the takeaways with another mention for Jordan Clark, who returned to the starting XI in the deeper role in midfield. In a match which saw the Town midfield up against the highly thought of trio of Matt Grimes, Joe Allen and Oliver Ntcham, the Town midfielder outshone all three.
His quality on the ball and ability to get about the pitch are all traits known about the former Accrington man, but in a match where any mistake made by the Town could be crucial his tactical awareness and positioning was spot on. He regularly read the play to either cut out a pass or block a passing lane, yet still managed to impact the game when he had the ball. That Clark is a wonderful footballer isn’t news to anyone but those who had forgotten that fact were given a strong reminder of it here.

Just what we needed. Team selection spot on, with Muskwe up front, which surprised a few, and Lockyer in the heart of the defence, where he would always be my first choice. Good to see Campbell scoring again from midfield – and, of course, a first goal from Morris. Definitely an ‘up’ this one, and all credit to NJ and the lads. There will be ‘downs’ to come – bound to be – but a performance like yesterday augurs well for the season. Always proud to be a Hatter, but even more so after that.
