The Hatters were well beaten at Ashton Gate on Tuesday evening when they followed up a 1-0 loss to Preston at the weekend with a 2-0 defeat against Bristol City. Here are our takeaways from the game.
Town need to get back to basics
Luton were well beaten by a Bristol City side who played well on the night but the Hatters didn’t help themselves. Not going with runners, no energy in the press and sloppy passing were all traits we don’t usually see from Nathan Jones’ men but which were sadly seen far too often at Ashton Gate.
The boss eluded to it in his interview after the game and his disappointment was clear for all to see after a first half performance that was comfortably short of what is required at the level the Town are operating at the minute. To pull away from the foot of the table a return to the basics they usually do so well in is a must in Swansea on Saturday.
Town looked better in a back four
When Nathan Jones was first at the club, Luton enjoyed a lot of success in a back four with a diamond in midfield. His second spell has mostly seen three or five at the back depending on how you look at it however are a truly pitiful first half in Bristol, the Town boss made three half time substitutions which saw a return to a back four with Gabe Osho and Sonny Bradley as the central defenders.
Town moved to a 4-3-3 formation which later in the half was converted into the diamond they were famed for in the League 2 and League 1 promotions. It might be that a formation switch is the future for the Hatters.
Woodrow puzzle needs to be solved
When Cauley Woodrow returned home in the summer a lot of Luton fans were excited at the prospect of their academy graduate spearheading the Town attack alongside talisman Elijah Adebayo. However, in each of his four league outings, the forward recruited from Barnsley has played behind two others in a number 10 position, a place where he looks a little all at sea so far. It might be that he is just resettling into the club and the new intensity and style the Hatters adopt, but given that the success of his career so far has been up top alongside a striker you wonder if he is being worked into a different position to get him into the team. Whatever the question is, the answer needs to be found quickly as the forward is rarely getting into the areas where he can make a difference.
Room for concern but no need to panic
Four games in and Luton are second from bottom and probably would be bottom in the league but for the pitch problems at Coventry. One goal in four games and no wins in that time are all things which are causing panic among some on social media, but it is still early days and the fact that four matches into the season no team has a perfect 100% record tells us this is going to be another unpredictable Championship campaign.
Despite the start to the season there is no need to panic into any kneejerk reactions but at the same time there are concerns which would be wrong not to be acknowledged, not least the lack of the intensity in the side which was so apparent last season. This remains a two result league where two positive ones on the trot can do wonders for a league position. Hopefully the first of those comes along at Swansea on Saturday and the Hatters can look upwards rather than see the concerns grow into something more significant.

Agreed! We’ve signed more players than we needed to but also too many that are similar and don’t seem to offer much pace. I think we’ve got options when Adebayo needs to come off or not start. But we don’t have any for Cornick. Nor for the wingbacks until Fred is fit (unless Doughty can also genuinely play there).
NJ’s trust in Bell is also curious. Bell’s weak arm in the back as his attempt to stop the second is the second game in a row he played a huge part in a goal against. He showed against Burnley what he can do up front (though he was already there for a throw in rather than making a run). But he doesn’t get forward or back enough. He’s just too passive and slow at the moment. Mind you he can’t be singled out too much for Tuesday. They were all bobbins.
My money is still on seeing gout the month winless. But we’ll come good when NJ and the squad have had a bit more time to figure things out.
