6 things we learned from Luton 1 Sheffield United 1

Luton felt hard done by to come away with just a point against the then Championship leaders Sheffield United, but despite the 1-1 scoreline there was more than enough promise to suggest the Hatters are getting back to their best after a slow start to the season. Here are our takeaways from Friday night’s televised clash.

Morris’ monster performance

The headed goal was sublime, the aerial equivalent of his debut strike the week before at Swansea, but if you only saw the TV highlights you missed one of the best performances from a number nine in recent memory. He was virtually unplayable, in the first half. From holding up the ball to bring other into play, to turning his marker and bullying anyone in a white shirt, if this was a sign of things to come then the future can’t come soon enough. Morris’ effectiveness dipped after the break, as did Town’s in general, which allowed Ollie McBurnie to equalise, so there’s still room for improvement, but if he can soon start replicating that first half form for 90 minutes then the record club fee Luton have forked out will feel a pittance.

Nathan Jones said: “He’s a good player. We haven’t broke our transfer record for a novice. He’s fantastic and we know that. What a great kid as well.

“We’ve had to pay a bit of money for him and considering the one before that was (Simon) Sluga, then I think we’ve just edged that.”

Clark can do almost everything

It wasn’t just Morris playing out of his skin in the opening period, as the midfield trio of Allan Campbell, Luke Freeman and Jordan Clark were exceptional.

Freeman was handed the man of the sponsor’s match award, which suggests the champers was blurring critical thinking, because Clark was the outstanding candidate. Not by much, because they were all superb, but Clark was seen leaping for defensive headers, spraying balls, linking the play and ghosting past multiples of midfielders like they weren’t even there. The Goliath of Sander Berge must’ve wondered what hit him.

Jones said: “He can be whatever he wants to be. If he adds a final ball and a final thing to his game then he’s like a Championship Thiago, he really is.”

Close but no cigar for Adebayo

Elijah Adebayo is still to hit the net, but only the short-sighted will still be bizarrely claiming – admittedly on the Wild West that is social media – that the big man is disinterested.

He’s not, he just needs one to go in off his arse. But the chances of that happening will be vastly increased in Town can maintain the supply lines that were on show against Sheffield United. On a deadlier day, Adebayo could’ve come away with the match ball, but the fact that he’s finding the right positions, plus his all-round play in which he was a consummate nuisance, shows that the goals will come. The plus this season is that, until they do, the Hatters have Morris and plenty more firepower waiting in the wings.

Jones said: “He’s just got to keep doing the right things, but I’m not worried about that because his performance levels are good now. He was excellent. He’s had a fantastic season, people are marking him but we’ve got three or four that can share the burden so I’m not worried about that.”

The best of Bree

Amari’i Bell provided the pinpoint assist for Carlton Morris’ goal, but there was an unfulfilled treasure trove of crosses from the other flank, with James Bree whipping in a series of stunning balls. Just as Adebayo could’ve hit a hat-trick, it was Bree that teed him up.

From a frustrating period – not just from Bree in games before this – where the final ball was severely lacking, this set the benchmark of what will be required from this point onwards.

“Top end,” Jones said of Bree’s contribution.

Reece on a roll

On the whole, centre halves used to specialise in kicking strikers up in the air, throwing their bodies in the way and heading and hoofing balls away for fun. Luton have that in Tom Lockyer, but in Reece Burke they have a defender who, while not shy of the rough stuff, exudes class when on the ball.

Other than the 10 minutes after the break, the Blades offered very little and when they did, Burke did the old-fashioned stuff well, though the equaliser didn’t cover anyone in glory (more on that next). But it’s some sight to see a centre-back maraud forward like Burke can.

Eye test for the lino

Luton’s performance levels dropped after half time and Sheffield United were looking like scoring, but it would be nice if they did it on their own merits and not because a ridiculously obvious offside was missed.

Sander Berge was clearly off in the build-up to the goalscoring corner. Not a VAR armpit (though this would’ve solved it in one replay), not the toe of a boot, but a good old-fashioned, clear as day, whole two yards offside that should be meat and drink to a linesman. That fact it wasn’t is beyond frustrating.

In his Sky Sports interview afterwards, Jones said: “I don’t think, I know Sander Berge is offside. When McBurnie heads it and it goes up in the air he is two yards offside. Not close, he is two yards offside.

“Then he goes in, fouls our keeper, then they foul after, so there are two fouls and an offside in the build-up to the goal and they can’t see it, so I don’t know what they’ve come for, that’s their job. That really annoys me because my team put in a performance tonight worthy of more.”
