MK Dons 2 Luton 1: Wilshere admits to ‘feeling of frustration’ after misery in Milton Keynes

The team that had not won a league game this season were gifted their first three points by a Luton side that can’t keep from shooting itself in the foot, as a first ever trip to Stadium MK ended in boos and misery.

Alex Gibley’s wonder striker put MK ahead at half time despite Town creating the better chances. That continued after the break and Jordan Clark finally got the Hatters level, and with 20 minutes remaining there looked only one side likely to win it.

Instead, against a Dons side that created little, George Johnston cut down Aaron Collins in the penalty area and the striker converted.

Town had survived a penalty shout moments before when Callum Marshall cleared a corner with his arm, but after getting away with that one they compound it with another.

What will irk most is that Johnston did not need to make the challenge, as Collins’ touch was taking him wide. But jump in the centre half did and Luton could not recover, despite registering 25 shots, though only five of those were on target. That’s just not good enough.

The 6,100 fans in the away end booed.

Wilshere said of the defeat: “That’s probably the frustrating bit, because we felt like the game was there for us to go back to back in this league, which is really important to find that consistency which we’ve been speaking about.

“We had a good week’s training and they didn’t have to do much, in my opinion, they didn’t do much.

“The first goal is a fluke or a situation where he’s probably tried to cross it. It goes in. We can deal with it better.

“Then the second one’s a penalty, which, at that point it felt like we were the only ones that were going to go on to win the game and we didn’t. So that’s the feeling of frustration.”

Added to that was the hope – now extinguished – that the Hatters had turned a corner last week at Wycombe. But it was one step forward, one step back.

And in a city which still holds so much animosity for some Luton fans, it was the worst stage of all to come up short, particularly as Town have now lost more than they’ve won this term.
