Not only did Roberts deserve more than the paltry caution that referee David Webb dished out, his over-the-top-of-the-ball lunge and secondary swipe with his other leg sent Morris screaming into the air but it was the landing that was painful.
Luton boss Rob Edwards said: “He’s hurt his shoulder. We don’t know what the extent of that is yet. He’s going to have to get an x-ray.
“I do think the challenge was a poor one. I know it happened quickly, so it’s difficult for the ref sometimes, but it wasn’t the yellow card.
“So that’s disappointing because we could lose him now, and we know how important it is for us.
“But what that does is give other people an opportunity I thought Cauley Woodrow was excellent when he came on. Really, really good.
“We know he’s a top player, so if we’re without Carlton for a period of time then we’ve got a rally like we did today.
“We lost Pottsy (Dan Potts) in a warm-up, we lose Burkey (Reece Burke) during the game, Pelly (Ruddock Mpanzu) goes into right centre back and we still managed to grind it out. So that’s what we do it and we’ll continue to do.”
But even with those enforced changes, Town battled to preserve a 13th clean sheet of the campaign and put a sliver of daylight between them and the chasing pack outside the play-off places.
Edwards said: “Based on the overall play – I know towards the end they’re throwing everything at it. There was a big scramble or the one for Luton blocks and they had the woodwork as well – but other than that I thought we kept them pretty quiet and still retained a threat.
“But, today, I don’t think was ever going to be pretty, really if I’m being honest. Pitches at this time of the season all around the country are quite difficult to play on.
“And Birmingham, obviously, are really fighting for their lives as well. Well, we’re all fighting for something.
“It was going to be a challenging game, but to come out and the right end of it is obviously very pleasing.”
