Birmingham at home to start season but Luton fans face Watford wait as fixtures released

The Hatters will raise the curtain on their Championship season at home to last season’s bogey side Birmingham, while fans will have to wait until April Fool’s Day for a chance to host arch-rivals Watford, after the fixture list was released.

Town’s first encounter with their neighbours, who were relegated from the Premier League last term, will be at Vicarage Road on October 22, with Luton looking to maintain their bragging rights after beating the Hornets 1-0 when they last met two seasons ago.

But that was during the Covid shutout of football fans across the nation, so supporters were not allowed into either the home or away legs of the derby.

And while the EFL have stated ‘we have attempted to minimise travel distances on 26th December, Thursday 29th December and Sunday 1st January 2023’, Luton face a lengthy New Year’s Day away trip to Huddersfield, where they were knocked out of the play-offs, with post-match crowd trouble marring the contest. A Boxing Day home clash against Norwich, followed by another away day at Queens Park Rangers are also on the Christmas cards.

Town’s season concludes at home to Hull on May 6, while they will learn tonight who they face in the Carabao Cup first round, when the draw is made, with the fixture currently scheduled for August 10th.

This season, of course, clubs will also miss a month of domestic football because of FIFA’s ludicrous decision to hold the Qatar World Cup – which would normally be underway now – in winter. So, Luton’s last fixture before the winter break will be at home to Rotherham on November 12 and they return to action on December 10 at Middlesbrough.
