Luton midfielder has joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Scottish midfielder – who joined the Hatters following his release from Birmingham City in 2018 – has only featured for Town in the Carabao Cup this season after 16 starts last term.

Shinnie played 41 times as Luton got promoted to the Championship last year but after the Hatters yesterday recruited Wales international Joe Morrell, the 31-year-old has headed to south London.

Asked yesterday if there could be some midfield departures Luton boss Nathan Jones said: “Maybe, but we’re in no rush or hurry, we’re in a good place, we’ve got a good squad, a competitive squad and it’s a development club here.

“We’re developing players, so to do that you need a great environment on a day-to-day basis and, to be honest with you, not everyone wants to go from here. They enjoy the training, they love being around each other and providing they have a chance of playing, which everyone does at the club, then there’s real good competition here and we’re happy with that.”

Talking to Charlton’s official website, Shinnie said: “I’m delighted to be here. I think the manager liked that I had experience of promotion in this division. It can be a tough division, we (Luton) had a brilliant season just getting over the line [in 2018/19], so I’ve got that experience, so I want to bring it here to help the rest of the lads as well.”
